DIM keeps knocking my computer off of WIFI plus other problems.

I was hoping the update would fix this but it hasn’t. If I check off more than two or three items at a time to download, DIM kicks me off my WIFI and I have to unplug it and plug it back in and restart DIM which takes like 20 minutes each time. Also the products are installing without a check mark meaning they won’t show up in Smart Content so I have to keep uninstalling unchecked items and reinstalling after restarting DIM over and over again (20 minutes each time to populate) until finally they end up with check marks. I still have several G2, G3, and G8 items that do not have check marks and are greyed out in Smart Content after years of trying. How can this be fixed? It’s making it too much of a hassle to buy new products if they are such a pain to install.

Ugh, now the whole program froze, wouldn’t let me exit and had to use task manager to quit it. Can I go back to the old version of DIM?
Back in the day, I would just click products and everything would download by itself and install correctly. Now it seems I have to manually download and install one item at a time or it kicks me off WIFI! And just now, even downloading ONE item kicked me off! It’s literally impossible to download and install now! I really need the previous version.
That sounds like a possible security software issue, throttling the downloads and blocking the communication with the database.
But I didn’t change anything except upgrading DIM. A few items download, then it cuts off my WIFI. Downloading is also much slower than it used to be. And the whole program never used to freeze.
It seems better now. I got a Cloudflare thing before here on the forums so maybe there was something wrong with Daz’s servers just as I was trying to download but that still doesn’t explain why it was kicking me off WIFI. It did that with the previous version too and the same problem with items installing without check marks that I had to keep reinstalling. That’s been going on for maybe a year, But finally things seem to be downloading right now at a normal speed without kicking me off. Spoke too soon. It just kicked me off as I was typing....
Weird question, but are you sure it's not your ISP kicking you off? Mine used to pull stunts like that if they thought I was downloading too much, along with throttling speeds if I downloaded more than a certain amount in one go. (Hilarious for a company that advertises themselves as being for gamers but has no clue about the average download size of a game.)
My downloads and everything is working perfect. But when I was offered the upgrade a few days ago, because I didn't have time to do a restore etc. so I bailed. I always do create a restore point first because things can go south. So ... I'm going to make a restore point and agree to the update and see what happens.
Wow! Last time, several days ago, when it said allow changes to PC I clicked no because it wasn't a good day for crap to happen. Now, this time it didn't announce an upgrade and appears to be the same old version happy to keep trucking along. I have 174 new downloads and it is still working like a charm.
I can only check off and download 3 items at a time. If I queue up more than that, it disconnects me from my WiFi. It never used to do that. I used to be able to just check download all, and hundreds of items would download fine. Luckily I buy less now. I have Spectrum high speed internet. This only happens with DIM.
WiFi shouldn't drop, no matter what DIM is doing. If you're having WiFi problems, maybe it's your WiFi. Have you tried connecting directly to your modem with an ethernet cable? If that doesn't fix it, it might be a problem with your modem. Or your computer.
I get those issues often on my Win7 which is Wifi connected but not my Win10 that has a ethernet cable plugged into the modem, so I assume only so many DIM downloads can occur at a given time on WIFI, it varies a lot with other types of downloads too, I can do big ones of 100GB or more but often not several small ones from other sites too.
This never used to happen. I’ve had the same WiFi and computer (Windows 10) for years. It started after one of the DIM updates. So far I’ve discovered with both DS and DIM that every upgrade makes things worse...
I was having the same problem you have been describing here and in your initial post. I use a fairly old USB wireless adapter that was plugged into a USB port at the front of the computer. By moving the USB wireless adapter to another USB slot at the back of the computer, the problem magically vanished.
I suspect the USB port the wireless connector had been plugged into was getting only intermittent power - causing it to keep dropping out under load (i.e., when downloading). The other thing I did was make sure the "power management" setting for the USB wireless device was set to "always on", rather than "allow this device to be turned off". I can't recall if that setting needed to be changed, but I do remember checking it.
Hopefully, if you are able to try another USB port (or do something equivalent if you have another type of wireless connector) it will fix the problem. I wasn't hopeful it would help, but I haven't had a dropout while downloading since making this change.
Also, perhaps it is worth mentioning, several weeks ago I got a 12GB RTX 3060 for rendering in addition to a 4GB GTX 980 that I had been using for many, many frustrating years. The 980 is now dedicated to running the Windows 10 desktop, whereas the 3060 is dedicated for Iray rendering. What a life-changing improvement! In hindsight, I suspect the additional power demand of the RTX 3060 may be what has caused the intermittent power issue with (seemingly just some of) the USB ports to become an issue.
Either that, or a recent Windows update did something to cause this issue behind the scenes.
Good luck fixing the issue as DIM was a nightmare to use when it was affecting my system.
Things get old. My connection to wifi used to drop with my old wifi adapter - it could only handle so many connections at once - streaming music, connecting to work vpn, web browsing, downloading/uploading files all at the same time could swamp the adapter. As you say you can only select up to 3 items to download at once, I'm inclined to think it is a similar situation; either the adapter or the router is getting overloaded.
If other devices are also getting kicked off the router when you download too many files at once, then it's probably the router. Otherwise try replacing the wifi adapter in your computer; I ended up replacing mine with a TP-Link Archer TX3000E for about $70 and haven't had a problem since. 5ghz wifi is also a bonus.
Actually I recently purchased a new router because I had an old Apple Airport and replaced with a new one made by google I think, but it didn’t help for that although it helped everything else and now my speeds are what they are supposed to be. I guess I just have to deal with the DIM issue. I’m not purchasing as much as I used to anyway.
On Windows Update click View Optional Updates and see if you can spot an update for the network card. It could be something that's just drifted out of date.
I thought this thread was related to DIM and found it was nothing related to DIM, but actually it is the WiFi or internet connection or modem or pc or operating system update or updates or related to the driver or WiFi settings or other settings or temperature etc.
Unfortunately, WiFi disconnection is a very common issue. You can try auto-connect (Connect automatically).
I am quite certain that DIM is only showing the symptoms, but is not the disease. As stated before, WiFi is influenced by a lot of things. I am pretty certain that DIM is not accessing any WiFi driver interface, but uses common OS features to up/download things. It might be that, if the number of parallel downloads are high, the WiFi interface just cannot handle that. Depending on the WiFi driver, and on the OS patch level, this can lead to a connection drop. There are quite a lot of compnents involved, and any of those can fail. With the change of the router, you have introduced a new parameter. The Apple airports are not that fast, as they use a rather old WiFi protocol. The new protocols are much faster, but can fail much more easily.
It's probably one or more neighbors' WiFi signals running interference with your wifi signal often enough to drop wifi temporarily for large files that take a long time to download but not so often for small files like when you browse.
You can try a WiFi extender for about $50 USD or buy a new WiFi 6 (aka ax) router and start using higher mhz band.
I think that's what @Wonderland already did. Also, WiFi 6 router will not help if the PC or laptop cannot handle it. Though, quite a lot of routers provide an option to do a search for a non-crowded channel. Then, fixing the router on that WiFi channel may also help.
Is your computer wireless or wired to the router? Take a look at this and see if it fixes your issue.

Well it's not typical. She should do a hard reset of her router. And clean install Windows 11 when it comes out. But save her DIM zip files & all that DIM config files so she can copy them back & avoid redownloading all that stuff.
Thanks for that info but everything is up to date except a feature update to Windows version 20H2 and an Intel system update 7/18/1968. (???) and I have no idea what either does and they are both optional. I was a Mac user my whole life and just got the PC when I finally moved from Poser to DS for IRay. There’s still so much to Windows I don’t understand,
The problem is my router and cable connection is in another room from my computer. I did purchase a super long Ethernet cable to connect directly to the computer but haven’t taken the time yet to set it up because it’s going to be a pain to do in a way that so I don’t trip on the cable. I originally got it so Virtual Desktop for the Oculus Quest would run better, but it’s actually fine on WiFi.
At some point I’ll set it up and hopefully that will help. For now I guess I just have to deal with just checking off a few items at a time.
Thanks everyone for your help!
Windows 11 will introduce another parameter into the equation. I would not recommend it. I would never ever go with a fresh release, be it Windows, Linux or Mac, or any other software. Always wait for the first service pack.
WiFi is very sensible to the way the close environment is built. In a house, made of mostely wood, I would not expecgt any issues. In a city flat, built of concrete, I would. The conctrete can contain quite a lot of steel. And that will not help with WiFi at all. WiFi is a complex equation with a lot of paramezers in it. I would target these parameters individually.
plus a lot more....
I get kicked off my WiFi as well, sometimes quite frequently, sometimes only once or twice in a session. I have only one neighbor, and whether I'm in the same room or not doesn't seem to change a thing. So it's basically just a mystery thing my router does from time to time.
What helped me a lot with DIM in this situation: No automatic install right after download, plus limiting the overall download sizes. Meaning I download everything first - always just selecting items up to about 1 GB in one go, then the next 1 GB, then the next ... - and then take the whole machine offline and finally install. This is working really well.
Maybe you could use that routine as well, figuring out beforehand what your magic download size (or number) is, and keeping the installation process completely separate and preferably offline. Best of luck in any case! It sounds like a major pain ...
