Although a different render engine can definitely make a difference it's not an issue of one engine being always better or worse than the other, a lot depends on context (what material or scene's you're working on) and of course your own expertise with said engines. For example... although Iray is definitely a better choice if you're going for photo realism you shouldn't underestimate 3Delight and/or Filiament either. Heck, I still mess around a bit with Lux Render (so: the version before it became LuxCore) and even that manages to get very nice results from time to time despite my material not being optimized for it.
I can't comment on LuxCore because I lost interest after they dropped backwards compatibility (it doesn't work properly anymore with plugins like Luxus).
