Flood Insurance Promo… Really?

Today I received a PC Club email telling me "Don't Forget to Buy Flood Insurance".  This, after my house flooded and Hurricane Ida caused devastating death and destruction this week. I don't know if Daz's marketing is on automatic, missed this week's news, or is truly insensitive... but man, it makes me think twice about being here.

...yeah feel the same way.  Natural disasters are a serious matter not to be taken so lightly.

They did back-pedal on a promo a couple years ago on a poorly named bundle that included two characters and a mobile home.

Nothing in the store was made in the last week. That would have been submitted likely a month or more ago. The timing is unfortunate, but not intentional. Likely scheduled a few weeks ago too and forgotten.

    Humor too soon?

I am in the camp that says anything can be the subject of humor, especially tragedy.  But I agree there is a time and place.

Same. I figured DAZ was giving out a reminder for next time, because it's called hurricane "season' for a reason.

I have an aunt and uncle that live outside of New Orleans that lost a vehicle and part of their roof along with flooding damage. I keep telling them, you chose to live there, so don't be calling me when the hurricane comes and you need a place to stay and they get a chuckle out of it because they know it's true.

In Germany, we had a terrible flood in July that killed almost 200 people. Not far from the area where our country house is located. I was a bit shocked when I read the headline to today's newsletter, although I also found it quite funny.

A friend of mine, a couple of collegues and my boss got flooded in that flood. No casualties, thank God. But getting an insurance is not that easy. Getting a flood insurance on a mounatin top? No problem. Getting one near a river? No way.

I was wondering why my emails didn't come in until almost lunchtime. And then, I still didn't see them until I saw this thread. Been working all day. With natural disasters becoming our new norm, maybe DAZ might not want to shove them into our faces. Between fires, floods, bugs, and viruses, it would be nice to have one safe place. And not have to be reminded we need to save our money to have a recovery fund for the next disaster. Instead of buying 3D assests. Just saying.

I posted about this over in the PC+ forum. The response was somewhat dismissive.

Very much this - it takes a fair amount of time to get products modelled, textured, tested and promo'd. This was started and submitted way before any of the current floods. It very much reminds me of an area near where I grew up - there was a dam built and the houses in the water zone vacated and the water came up almost to the roofs. Driving past was eerie, especially as a child :)
There's always going to be unfortunate co-incidences because users are located all over the world, and there's some kind of disaster happening somewhere.

My sympathies with anyone dealing with floods.

Why should DAZ's feet be held to the fire for an innocent coincidence when Hollywood, insurance companies, governments and seemingly everyone but us are making a mint on natural disasters or by talking about them? There is a long list of disaster movies.

As someone that is rebuilding my basement after repeated flooding I didn't take that email as intentially insensitive. Just a coincidence.

More insesitive is good luck to any of us actually being able to buy flood insurance, move away from flood zones, or do the work on our properties to divert flooding (which usually isn't possible anyway for most people, the jury is still out whether I can on my property, it does rain much more now so...hmmmmm). DAZ has nothing to do with that.

  • There wouldn't be a coincidence if the joke wasn't made at all.

My personal experience (and keeping this as to not run afoul of the rules)...

About five years ago I finally got my technology adverse upper management to agree to opening up a DAZ account. I had been using Bryce and DS to create a number of short online training videos to deal with frequently asked questions / training issues. They were not onboard until they actually saw the results and got feedback from customers. It was an up hill battle.

A handful of months later DAZ sent out a daily newsletter with the title "Leash Your Breasts" or something equivelent. The message was automatically flagged as porn related. IT got involved and decided to make a case about it. Common sense would have said to read the newsletter and see what it actually meant. Instead the people who were never onboard with the project grabbed the flag and ran with it.

Management closed the account and that was that.

I'm not sure the concern was with the products at all, but with the marketing. Might be a good reminder to have the DAZ team look at these things before they go out, even if they were set up weeks before. Not an uncommon problem with social media account managers.

Geez, anything flood or fire related at point is in poor taste... very poor taste... but as of late, I'm starting to think this is some kind of dumb viral marketing ploy or something along those lines... stir up controversy and get more views... (I'm guessing that's what's being taught in marketing school now...)

I mean are ya really that clueless?

That or the marketing team has been sequestered in a underground bunker with no outside communications... because Ida was pretty hard to miss and be unaware of these past several days, so you either gotta assume it was an some kind coincidence or accident, or people's homes being washed away and folks drowning in their basement apartments is considered fair game for advertising satire.

And yes, in case anyone is wondering, a week IS too soon.

Per my original post, after Ida, receiving the marketing email angered me, and I wanted to do anything but shop at Daz.

Daz has said in the other thread that this release was setup weeks ago, and that it didn’t have the wherewithal to change the timing of it, nor preempt folks from making real world parallels.

While I think I now understand how this happened, I hope it doesn’t happen again. I  think it does a business well to stay on top of the news, and to pull marketing that threatens to add hurt to people’s loss from tragic events.

Finally, I appreciate businesses that really acknowledge their customers when they’re unhappy.

I can imagine that. I am sorry for your friend, your collegues and your boss!

In our community (Blankenheim, where the Ahr rises) there was almost no damage, because the area is elevated. But already in nearby Bad Münstereifel everything was/is destroyed. I don't know if the poor people there can get flood insurances now.

They have gone to the wrong school, they should try the same methods for attention as is used by the "Albanian newsreader" (not going to link any pictures) laugh

  • For some reason I didn't get this week's newsletter. Does anyone have a lint to it? Unfortunately, Richard hasn't added it to his list of newsletters.

Thanks Richard.  I'm not seeing the  "Don't Forget to Buy Flood Insurance" comment on it.  Has it been purged?

To expand on my comments I made in the MO forum, everything is set up way in advance.

Candidly, I didn't see the NL header before it went out, but as I have said to the team internally, I'll be super honest and admit I wouldn't have even put the two together even if I did.  I'm not ignorant to current events, but will say that having a 7 week old baby and trying to stay on top of work means that longer term memory isn't great at the moment and sometimes, being a flawed human means that sometimes things fall through the cracks.

Would we change the NL title if we had all been aware, sure.. we never intend to be edgy or controversial with anything - but sometimes the planets align, something happens and those close to certain things feel particularly affected.. so apologies for that, but please accept it wasn't our intention.  It went out, and then we couldn't do anything about it.

    Thanks

It was the NL title, so it's not part of the NL itself, only the emailed version.

  • Thanks Jack, I realized after reading more of the forum that you had just had a baby, and that what happened was surely unintentional, and an unfortunate alignment of events for all during a difficult time.  I really appreciate you responding here.  People here like you for a reason, you're a great asset to the Daz community.

Please contact CS and they can make sure you're on the list.. assuming you've checked your spam filters etc.

Also, if you look in here you will see they are added weekly (very kindly) by Richard.
