Pre-render view is too dark

I have lights for this render as it is Amanda's office with everything default and the renders are showing up ok, but with this and a few scenes I have used I find the view of everything is too dark and I am unable to see what I am doing before posing. I previously filled scenes with spotlights which would work and end up using them for final renders but I have started using the default lights which works well in the render but is too dark for everything before then. This seems to be the case for all scenes except the hotel room which only works with spotlights due to the default lights not working at all with that one. Is there a way I can make lights visible pre-render?

Are you viewing in "texture shaded" but rendering in Iray perhaps?

Alternatively, do you have "preview lights" selected in the "Window" menu?

Menu "Window", at the bottom of the list you can see "Preview light" or something to that effect, which has a light button selected, unselect the light button.

  • If I have it set to Iray, everything is ridiculously slow to respond and unuseable. I unchecked Preview lights and that worked, cheers.

CTRL+L is the default short cut to turn the "Preview Lights" on/off.

    Per DS reference guide:

    Preview lights

    Use scene lights

"When you add lights to a scene, they may not appear to have any effect unless you turn this mode on. When Use Scene Lights is off, only a default single light (called a “headlight”) is used to light your scene. When this mode is on, the headlight is turned off and only the lights in the scene are used to light the scene."

As the terminology is slightly different in the user's manual:

    Section 7.2:

"Being able to preview the current scene lighting is a great way to get a feel for how the lighting will look in the final render. There may be times when you'd like to switch back to headlamp lighting for your preview. Perhaps you are trying to move figures in a dimly lit area of the scene. You can switch back to headlamp lighting by toggling the 'Use Scene Lights' action in the toolbar. When the icon for the action is highlighted DAZ Studio will display the preview using the current scene lighting, otherwise DAZ Studio will display the scene using headlamp lighting."

Edited to correct typographical error, and added information for clarity.

It's Preview Lights (try to show a preview of the lights, or use a headlamp) not a Preview Light that can be turned on.

Cheers, how do I change the FOV as the renrders are zoomed in too much?

  • When I load a light fixture from another environment it will load but it will only load as turned off. How do I change it to on?
