How can I tell if a website is legit or not?

This topic was broached recently when I found a pirate site and before I could get any real answers about how to avoid or report them so I'm patronizing the actual creators, the whole thread was removed. Is there a list somewhere of trusted retailers?

The trouble is, any list of legitimate sites would inevitably point out the dubious ones, and while we understand the desire for a list unless they've actually confessed or been found guilty in a court we can't allow that.
