New computer frustration

Ok I have a new computer and it works fine and I can render with the cpu. But when I deselect cpu under photoreal devices and try to render using just my video card (nvidia gforce rtx 2070 8gb) all I get is a black screen. Is there some setting I have to choose to make sure that Daz uses the video card? Should I be worried the video card is not working? is there a way to test it? At a total loss here.

...interesting, I have only the GPU checked under photoreal devices and I have no issue rendering. What Nvidia driver are you using?  for the latest version of 4.15 you need driver 451.48

You can check this in the Nvidia Control Panel -> Help Tab ->  System Information.  The driver version will be the first item listed.

Also check to see if the card it fully seated in the slot and the power cords are firmly connected.

it's a geforce RTX 2070 super the driver is 442.76. But I am using version 4.10 of studio

  • It's also weird because if I selected interactive rather than photoreal and then uncheck  the cpu it renders with what seems to be the video card, but it looks totally different.

I am not sure how to see if the card is fully seated, but the power cords are firmly connected (at least the cord for the computer). It's a laptop.

4.10 is too old for 20x0 cards, you need at least 4.11 for them to work.

  • OK, oy. The only reason I didn't upgrade is that It seems like that new content manager could screw up my content. 4.10 is the latest I have. I'd need to jump to the newest. I supposed I can try.

Not sure what new content manager you're talking about. If you meant DazCentral you don't have to use it at all, DIM, Connect and manual install all still work.

...ah, didn't realise that but makes sense as 4.12 had the first version of Iray optimised to support Turing [20xx] cards.

I only use 4.10 for rendering as I have a pre-RTX GPU which renders slower in 4.12 as OptiX was set to "always on" by default for older cards (in comparative render tests, render speed in 4.10 almost half that in 4.12 using the same settings on the same scene).

If you saved your installers I would go with 4.12. If not file a support ticket and see if you can't get it that way if you don't want to use the latest version.

Yes I meant daz central. If I can install studio without having to use daz central I will try it. I would like to be able to use genesis 8.1 also.

I never got the installers. I think I will try the latest and see what happens. Might mean I need to update the driver?

...for that you will likely need at least Driver update 451.48.  I simply dowloaded the newest one: 4.71.96.  No bugs, no BSODs, no boot issues (and I'm still on W7).

I've archived all my installers since Daz 1.8.  The only ones I don't have are 4.6 or any of the 4.14 releases as I was satisfied with the version of 4.12 I have been using (the 0.47 beta) as it ah been so stable.

  • OK. I don't have the patience tonight. I'm finding that my files all open fine, but since many scenes have specialized surfaces with textures from various runtimes, I am having to recreate many saved figures and scenes.

Also, I cannot figure out how to remove the yellow skeleton framing in the viewport when I used the node tool. I know I got rid of it on my old computer. Not even sure where to look.

    Thanks for all your help!

  • Thanks Kyoto Kid. I upgraded to 4.15 and upgraded the driver and it works. Very nice. Hopefully no issues. ANd thanks so much IceCRmn for showing me how to just download the installer.
