How can I make eyes appear brighter in the renders?

I think it might have something to do with Ambience ... I had a thread with an answer for that for another item (a halo), though I can't find it right now. Hopefully someone else will chime in with the way to make this work for you.

A tiny linear point light with a low distance end by each eye.
Turn up the ambient.
Apply a semi-opaque white overlay to the diffuse map with the Layered Image Editor, or lighten the diffuse colour if it isn't white.
Turn up the specularity.
It depends on the current settings and on the effect you want.
