First of many, many questions (feeling very depressed here)
I've taken the plunge and downloaded DAZ 4.7 to replace my creaking DAZ 3.0, and how I wish that I hadn't. After about 2 weels of trial and error - mainly error - I've not been able to progress one inch and I've been wasting loads of my time going round and round in circles.
Of the thousands of problems that i've encountered, let me ask them one at a time so as not to flood the forum.
Everything has been "downloaded and installed after download" automatically so I'm assuming that all of the files have been installed correctly and the problem lies with me.
So ...
I open DAZ 4.7
I have an error message - "cannot open the start-up scene C/users/myname/Documents/DAZ 3D/Studio/My Library/People/Genesis/Genesis.dsf
This is not a surprise as there's nothing like this directory on my computer. I use the French language so I have a "Mes Decuments" (my documents) on my computer. So the easiest solution is to create a new directory, call it "Documents", and drag everything into there. However, when I try to create the directory called "Documents" - I receive a Windows error message which, translated, says that "the destination already contains a directory called Mes Documents - [so presumably Windows recognises and automatically translates the directory names])
So off I trot into mes documents and there's the DAZ 3D directory, and in there is the Studio sub-directory and in there is a sub-directory called - errrrr - My DAZ 3D Library and NOT My Library.
In this My 3D Library is a sub-directory called People, and in there is a sub-directory called Genesis, but in there, there is no file called Genesis.dsf.
Using Windows search, I track down the Genesis.dsf file. It's in C/users/public/Documents/My Daz 3D Library/data/Daz 3D/Genesis/ base - ie nothing like where it's supposed to be.
Still, no matter. I click on the file to open it. When Daz 4.7 opens, it starts to upload the Genesis file, but now I receive an error message "an error occurred while reading this file. See the log file for details". So I track down the log file, and it tells me (very helpfully)
"Loading Startup Scene : C:\Users\Public\Documents\My DAZ 3D Library\data\DAZ 3D\Genesis\Base\Genesis.dsf
Error reading file, see log for more details"
What kind of help is this in resolving the problem? This is nonsense.
But never mind - I'm not ready to give up yet. If Daz wants to see a file called C/users/myname/Documents/DAZ 3D/Studio/My Library/People/Genesis/Genesis.dsf, then so it shall, and I duly create the appropriate net of directories.
Now, with the Genesis.dsf file where Daz 4.7 expects to see it (although why Daz's Install manager couldn't put it where the program was supposed to find it is totally beyond me), I yet again go to open Daz 4.7 and ... guess what?
Yes, you've guessed it. I have an error message "An error occurred while reading the file. See the log file for more details".
And so I do.
And this time, the log file is a little more helpful. It tells me

So any ideas what I'm doing wrong, because surely it must be me, as DAZ wouldn't ever mess up like this, would it?

The Daz Studio 'install set' now consists of:
The base program itself
Genesis
Lights and Shaders
Genesis 2 Female
Genesis 2 Male
You'll need, at a minimum, the first three of those to get a 'clean start' of Daz Studio (as by default it loads a scene with a single untextured Genesis figure at start-up - you can change that in preferences).
The next thing you'll need to insure is that Daz Studio knows where you content has been put. It may sound a little crazy but just because you installed everything via the Daz Install Manager does not mean that Daz Studio knows where it is! Regardless of how (and where) you have installed things the Preferences dialog (Edit> Preferences ... or F2) under the 'Content Library tab/section will allow you to tell Daz Studio where your content is, 'just' click on the 'Content Directory Manger ...' button at the bottom. In the nex screen under Content Sets, expand the DAZ Studio Formats and ensure that your install location for your content is listed. If not, click on the 'New...' button and add it.
Can you run Studio at all or does it crash to the desktop? If you can run it, you need to go into Content Directory Manager, select Daz Studio Formats and add the My Library sub-directory. Then it should be able to find Genesis and everything else it's looking for.
Now to have a go at the next problem :-(
The error message is the result of start scene having an outdated reference to Genesis before the DSON .duf format became the standard. In Preferences on the Startup tab uncheck the Load File box and set the path button beside it to None, also on the Scene tab set the Load File button to None.
But when DAZ created DIM they changed the default install path to C/users/public/Documents/My Daz 3D Library, a shared directory which can be accessed to all users of a computer, while "Mes documents" is specific to one user. Not a bad idea per se, except that they didn't change DS4 default configuration to adapt to this change....:roll:
