Im sick of this program

Every day i have different issue with Daz3D

On Fiday i missed Genesis 3 figures. Today im missing Genesis 8 female  figures....How in the world? I just turned on the computer.

Also few days ago i didnt check out computer turned off somehow, i was sleeping, in the morning - surprise -surprise:

I CANT OPEN THE PROJECT ANYMORE I WORKED 8 hours ...what in the hell can corrupt save file ???

Loading actors in new project with crashes i dont even want to mention.

Crashes after canceling the render also is fun to watch...learn something from another developers make damn autosave ...

I regret for every $ spent on this.

your first post should always be one asking for help with an issue wink

that works much better for most things in life

  • How did you install the content? Are you getting any error messages? Which panes and ciontainers are you using when you try to access the content?

On the unreadable file, I fear it may have been corrupted by the restart (or a disc write issue) - auto-save would not help there as it would still be vulnerable to the same issues. Unfortunately Daz scene files are compressed on save, using GZ compression, so it's possible if it's just a single bad byte that an archive repair tool might salvage it.

Never work on a scene file if you can help it. Always save out presets for poses, cameras, lights, etc. That way, if you do crash, you can very easily reassemble the project. And for good measure, go to the file in your OS and tick "Read-Only" to make sure you don't overwrite it by mistake.

  • That seems a bit drastic, but I do agree with the wisdom of also saving presets for things you have edited and of course using incremental saves so you can roll back. I am aware that this is a counsel of perfection, having lost work of my own in various applications over the years.

Daz Studio keeps track of "Last Saved" filepaths on the basis of what kind of thing you're saving. If you mix up what's a scene and what's a scene subset, it's very easy to overwrite something you didn't mean to when you hit Ctrl-S. That's why I recommend flagging it read only.

Save (cmd/ctrl S) will work only on scenes anyway - a scene subset merged into an untitled scene will still be untitled, or merged into a previously saved scene it will retain the save name.

  • You could try Poser, and Blender.

     You're just sadistic aren't you?

    lol

  • There are a couple solutions to the extremes people are suggesting.

Super save(https://www.daz3d.com/super-save ) is a script based solution that allows incremental saves.

Pontari plugs' Recent files(https://www.pontari.com/Products/DazStudio/RecentFiles/default.htm ) is a plug-in based solution that allows the same, with some other features.

Which ever solution, remap the default CTRL+S shortcut from the default save to the alternate save.

This way you won't have to retrain the muscle memory for the shortcut.

In my opinion "Don't shoot the messenger" applies here. For the simple reason that during the 7 or 8 years that I've been using Daz Studio I never experienced anything like OP's making me convinced that these problems weren't necessarily caused by Daz Studio itself but were rather signs of other underlying problems.

It's easy within ICT to blame the last thing that changed on your PC or certain programs for possible issues. But more than often those are merely signs pointing towards other issues.

    +1

It sounds alot like a hard drive starting to go bad to me (if it isn't a CMS problem). Random stuff going missing is often an indication that you experienced a hard drive crash (the head actually hitting the platter), and the microscopic magnetic debris the crash created is gradually spreading and causing data loss. At least that has been my experience,  your milage may vary.

Not sure what you mean by "never work on a scene file" - aren't they all scene files? Anyhow, I think your advice about saving is good although I use Scene Subsets. If I dress up a character I save a SSub of her in those clothes so that she can appear in other scenes dressed the same.

There used to be a time when DAZ Studio crashed on me several times a day but not recently - so I have become lazy and don't keep hitting save like I should. The occasional crash annoys me more because I have not been saving rather than the fact it has crashed.

I mean exactly what I said: save out presets instead of scene files, and rebuild the scene when you need to render it.

  • I must admit, the addition of an auto save feature would be great because nothing is worse than getting really into a scene and have something so petty like a simulation or a smoothing modifier cause a random lockup/crash.

I just lost a scene that i spent about 5 hours on because the simulation decided to blow up and crash, lucky for me i save everything as subsets so i can kind of rebuild the scene if it crashes when i forget to save.

You could buy, or wishlist, this product.  https://www.daz3d.com/super-save
