Need help learning how to use Graphic Art Cameras

LindaBLindaB Posts: 180

I recently purchased Age of Armour's Graphic Art Cameras, but I can't figure out how to use them, I seem to be missing some fundamental concept. This is what happens: I load the camera into the scene, apply a preset and render - but it's just a photo-real render, no Graphic Art Effects at all. I've used Poser for years but I'm relatively new to DAZ Studio. I've used graphic art shaders in Poser to get various artistic effects (pencil drawing, line drawing, ect.) BUT I'm totally unfamiliar with the idea of getting these effects via the use of a specialized camera. I followed the instructions on the pdf carefully, but I seem to be missing some vital piece of info, probably because I'm a newbie to DAZ Studio and to the whole concept of getting art effects with specialized cameras. I couldn't find any contact info for 'Age of Armour', on the DAZ website, either. How can I get these cameras to work? Any suggestions? Thanks

I don't have this set, but, are you selecting the Camera that you want to render with in the Viewport settings?

It is normally set to 'Perspective View', change that to select the Graphic Art Camera that you want to use from the drop down menu, then try rendering.

Yes, I did make sure I had the Graphic Art Camera selected when I rendered.

I have an open problem ticket on these cameras - they don't work in 4.7.0.12 (the current release). I just asked for an update, as the last response was in December, when the problem had been referred to development. My suggestion at this time is to contact sales support (by the "contact us" link at the bottom of the page) and open a problem ticket; either contact sales for a refund or technical support because the cameras don't work. If you go the second route you can reference my report #180902.

There is documentation listed (and a pdf) in the readme. That might help you.

I guess I should just ask for a refund, since who knows if they'll ever get around to updating the cameras. It's a shame, It seemed like such a fun creative tool and I was really looking forward to experimenting with them. Thanks for the info.

...the 4.7 update has also broken of the Atmospheric cameras as well. The Vignette and Colour cameras do not work at all. As with the Advanced Lights I uninstalled and reinstalled them with the DIM but only the basic Fog and Volumetric/EZ Volume cameras work though I now sometimes get render artefacts with the EZ volume one which never happened before.

Flagging on the Advanced lights is not working either.

I ordered Graphic Art Cameras and although it is claimed by Daz to work with 4.8 , the camera's do not work at all . I am not going to wait for forum reactions anymore , I'll ask a refund.

I fixed this sometime ago, there are 2 videos I uploaded to YT that shows how to fix this issue, it was meant as a guid for Daz to fix the problem.

...still a pain if you don't know how to use the Shader Mixer.

The actual "break" occurred with ver 4.7 and included the Vignette & Colour cameras in the Atmospheric Cameras as well as flagging surfaces using SSS using the Advanced lights.  Those still have not been fixed. THis is why OI am now pending more time with IRay as the Atmowpheric Cameras and Advanced Lights were important tools for my work in 3DL.

I don't know if it would be allowed to post an encrypted script .dse link that checks if Graphic art cameras is installed and only then apply the fix to affected files. I wouldn't mind doing such script.

maybe a moderator could inform us.

  • What changes are needed?

  • jag11jag11 Posts: 885

Basically, the fix is quite simple, all that has to be done is replace two Variable [Fixed] bricks, in earlier versions to 4.7 they loaded to fixed values u and v, now they load values Ci and time. By replace I mean delete the old bricks and create new set u and v values and reconnect bricks, apply the fixed shader to the camera and save as a new camera and replace the old .duf. I tested this method once the fix is applied it works in all versions of DS 4.8/7/6.

The steps are clearly shown in the videos mentioned two posts earlier.

  • OK, well if you can script that I think it would embed little enough of the shader that it would be fine under the EULA - the scripts would manifestly require the user have the original shaders to do anything with them.

This is the link to the script that fixes the Graphic Art Cameras - Engrave Camera.

The script(.dse) does not violate the EULA, and does the following:

    • Checks for the installed content of the Graphic Art Cameras
    • Makes a backup of the original file
    • Opens the original faulty file
    • Changes 8 bytes of the file.
    • Saves the changes.

You can download the script from this location:

Let me know if it works for you.

  • Thanks so much for these scripts.  I actually had a ticket in and CS pointed me to this thread as I hadn't seen it even though I did several searches.  I did have to reboot DS which wasn't mentioned, but both cameras now work in DS 4.8.

Is there a similar fix for the Color and Vignette cameras in the Atmospheric Camera?

  • jag11jag11 Posts: 885

Here's the fix for the Atmospheric Effects Cameras' Colorize Camera.

    Download from here

    Same instructions as above.

...what about flagging SSS shaders with the Advanced lights? That sounds like a much more complicated fix.

The date check failed error is raised when the script detects the file "/data/Age of Armour/Graphic Art Cameras/AoA_HalftoneCamera/AoA Halftone Camera.sdf" has been modified, try to reinstall the Graphic Art Cameras.

@Kyoto Kid far more complicated :(

    thats not nice

AFAIK Graphic Art Cameras are a DIM Install only product, if this ever gets moved to DAZ Connect fix won't work.

It can be installed with Daz Connect, it would only be an issue if it were encrypted.

...yeah that's what I thought, Without a fix, my work in 3DL will continue to be extremely limited as most of the characters I set up for that render engine have SSS.  I really miss rendering with the AoA lights as it is so much quicker than UE or Iray, as well as I have more control over shadows and effects.

Thank you for the camera scripts though.  Will there be one for the Vignette Camera?

...let's hope that doesn't happen. Fortunately I backed up my DIM install folder so I can manually install if necessary.

    i got it with connect

    deleted

    and installed with dim

now we have some kind of hybrid install system

you have to look what works and what not

not a clean system for me

I down-loaded the script, but have not seen any change in how the Graphic Arts Camera works (or doesn't work).  This probably sounds dumb, but am I supposed to install the script in some folder?  Right now it's just sitting in my Downloads.  Or could it, perhaps, be a a problem working on a Mac?

  • I confirm that @jag11's scripts successfully fix AoA's Engraved, Halftone and Color cameras in DAZ Studio 4.9 (installed through DIM). Big thanks for these fixes! smiley

You need to copy the .dse scripts in your content folder so they show up in your content library. You can then launch them from DAZ Studio. You might need to restart DAZ Studio for the changes to take effect.

Hi ! Excuse me not to well-understand the process to correct the art cameras... I'm not as pro users as you ^^' , and I'm a bit lost ...

Summing up for somebody like  me , is to say what ? the Art camera doesn't work on the 4.10 version of DAZ ? And to make it good, we have to install the two scripts linked ?

I didn't understand the workflow too , do we have to load an iRay scene ? Or a 3D light one ? With hdri lighting ? Or a Spotlight lighted scene ? I've just installed the two scripts and nothing happens... When I load the FIX colorize Camera , Igot this message :

Message that I don't understand ... And nothing happens with the halftone camera...

If you could light up my mind... 'd be great :)
