Questions about Unique Characters, eg Vyusur's Lyra

I am curious about unique characters. I have noticed a few PA's, Vyusur in particular, generate unique characters. I was interested enough to get 'Lyra' yesterday, but there are others. Can I ask people's thoughts on them?

It strikes me that they cost the PA a great deal more time & effort to create. The character needs to have their own morphs, hair, clothes, poses etc. It is an example of technical mastery and being good at everything, textures, modelling, rigging and morphs. Very, very impressive. What I'm not sure I understand is why the PA's do it. It seems to me that it's just so much more effort than creating a single character morph for something like G8 and the return is only slightly higher than a G8 Character morph. I suspect financially on an hourly rate basis, it's less attractive to do than a G8 mcharacter morph. Is it because the characters have markets away from DS/Poser and can go into gaming type environments too? Or is it the satisfaction of creating something totally from scratch? (this one I can understand) Or is it the total freedom it gives the PA? I am struggling to understand what the motivation might be.

In the case of Vyusur's Lyra I noticed that the default pose is similar to the G8 'A' pose, has very similar visible names to the bones and it appears standard G8F poses work when applied to the character - except the fact that the eyes side-side operates in what I regard as being the 'sensible', opposite, direction to G8. That is good, really good.

Then there is the issue of clothing and hair. Having a unique character means that you are limited to the clothing/hair supplied or you have to find some way of making other clothing/hair fit. That bit I'm stuck with at the moment. Some of the 'Lyra' promo images had what seemed to be G8F clothing/hair fitted, so it is possible. Could anyone suggest avenues for me to try? Obviously there is no G8F type autofit clone, so how would I start fitting the clothing? I suspect it'd be export the G8F clothing as obj, scale and move as required in a modeller and then import and transfer the rigging. If there is a better way, could someone suggest it? Or would creating a G8F autofit clone be the simplest method? (Catherine3678ab has suggested how to do it in some of her posts).

Anyway, I am really impressed at the amount of work in these unique characters, but what are your thoughts?

Regards,

Richard.

they can wear most dforce clothing,

sadly while clones are possible they cannot be redistributed from DAZ figures thanks to the EULA

one can make their own using Zprojection in Zbrush for example

  • Was thinking more of making one for personal use not redistributing. ZBrush is not something I have, but I do have the C++Builder programming suite and a 3D modeller that I programmed from the ground up, so I can add almost any function I want. So long as I can think it through... (which is really the most difficult bit)

Both creating your own clone and modifying the obj to fit the base figure then using transfer utility would work, as long as the target figure is a weightmapped DS figure (transfer utility and autofit won't work for figures with legacy rigging).

  • I had forgotten about the weight mapping. I shall check.

    Bingo!

I wish someone would make clothing and other support for my standalone figures. I have no time for anything above creating the figures themselves.

Thank you for purchasing and for your kind feedback!

  • Vyusur, thank you for giving your thoughts as to why you make the huge effort to create these characters. Amazing. Simply amazing. I wish it weren't the case, but modelling clothing from scratch is beyond my capabilities. I'd like to tack on 'for the moment' to the statement above, but honesty compels me to avoid that. I doubt I'll ever be able to make clothing, much to my disappointment.

Honestly, making clothing is easier than you probably think. It's pretty simple to make a basic t-shirt or pants, and once you've done that a couple times, you can try progressively more complex alterations. To me, rigging, weight mapping and adding JCMs are much more complicated than the modeling side.

Also, to your original question, some people have commented that Vyusur's original figures have better joint bending than Genesis figures, but I can't speak to that myself.
