Looking for: 3D Landscape Generator

I was thinking about getting some sort of program which which I can generate 3D landscapes. Ideally something which can export the landscape for use with DAZ, ideally something which isn't as complex as Blender, and - of course - as cheap as possible. Should be easy! :)

Back in the day, Terragen was for free, but that's no longer so. I'm obviously reluctant to pay 100+ $ - with a price tag that high, it would make more sense to learn Blender.

What are my options? What about Bryce? What else is out there?

Thank you four your input!

    What O.S. are you running?

If on windows, there is L3DT http://www.bundysoft.com/docs/doku.php?id=l3dt:about

There is the standard edition which is free. http://www.bundysoft.com/L3DT/downloads/standard.php

Bryce has the advantage of send to DAZ studio via a bridge
but I prefer doing stuff in Carrara myself which natively does landscapes, clouds and trees and can load most DAZ and Poser models natively too.

It appears I'm too demented to even find Bryce on the Daz store... :/

I'm vaguely aware that Bryce can do something like what I want, but I don't really know about specifics - hence my question :)

Thanks - this means that Bryce is out, however. I'm using OS X 10.9.5, which is apparently incompatible. Meh.

What other options do I have?

Infinito is a terrain generator designed for DAZ Studio (it functions as a plug-in). I haven't used it myself, though, so I don't know much more about it than what's on the product page.

You might consider Vue and Carrara also, though none of these are as cheap as Bryce (to say nothing of DS or Blender).

Terragen might be a good choice (although I've never tried Mac export to DS)

I've never used Natural Scene Designer but they have a Mac version with export

    Thanks all for the advice!

I'm a bit hesitant about Infinito - haven't seen or read much about it, and it's not exactly cheap (meaning I can just as well go for a dedicated program). At the moment, I'm leaning towards Vue; it looks like a powerful tool with affordable package deals.

I'll think about it some more, and probably ask around a bit :)

Vue is locked to your computer and all content locked to it
    everything needs a module
nothing loads in from DAZ without lots of work
it baffles me how some would rather use it than Carrara
Carrara only $65 if Plat Club and uses DAZ content
Bryce would even be a better choice IMO on some sort of Windows emulator
we have lots of Mac users in the Carrara forum BTW

I won't go to the hassle of using a Windows emulator (or a Wine file, or whatever). In my experience, this just doesn't work as smoothly as a native program.

It appears to me that with most or all programs I choose, I will end up paying more than the initial price tag. Carrara, just like Daz, will get me with content, after all. I'm honestly not sure whether either choice is much cheaper in the long run. If I add together what I paid on Daz content so far, I might just get a bit dizzy :)

But as I said, I've not decided on anything yet.

(I appreciate all your advice hugely, but I'm aware that this forum might be a tad biased :) ).

    I am a Mac user on 10.10.2
I use Carrara 8.5 Pro for all my landscapes, vegetation, Volumetric clouds.
There are presets for terrains, waters, skies, rocks, clouds, fog, and more that makes life easier.

Thank you all for your advice! I'll sleep on the matter for a few days before I decide on anything, and then I'll give myself a birthday gift next week ;)

Thanks for the links! I can certainly use those props. Even with regular primitives, d-formers and displacement mapping, you can do a lot. But there are limits in that approach, which you can avoid with a more specialized software.
