Newbie question - can't apply clothng to figure
Hi all,
New to Daz Studio 4.7. I'm looking to create static poses for an ice skater figure to go into a book.
I purchased Victoria 4.2 base (http://www.daz3d.com/victoria-4-2-base) and the skating outfit V4 Arabesque (http://www.daz3d.com/v4-arabesque) that seemed like it would do well. There was an Aiko figure, but it's anime and I want something more realistic.
So it all shows up in the Content Library, but the "Dress A" and "Dress B" as well as the white skates have little "scroll" icons on the top left and try as I might they don't load on the Victoria figure. (The Victoria 4.2 actor also has this little scroll symbol on it, but it loads fine.) Only the very basic green dress and green skates are able to be added to the figure.
I've searched through all of the documentation and help and can find no reference to the little scroll symbol. I even tried Poser and it also only loads the green dress and skates. I purchased this specifically for the white skates and colorful outfit, but can't even get it to load.
Any suggestions? I'm totally baffled.
Also, when I select the figure, there is no 'hair' prop...do I need to buy that separately?
Thanks,
Deborah

I don't have this item, but I'm guessing that the objects themselves load green -- they are located in the Figures or Props library. The files to change the colors are in the Materials or Pose library. To use them, first load the object from the Figures library, then select that piece of clothing and apply the white material to it.
No, there are three distinct clothing types, each with a different color and pattern. The green one is very simple, the burgundy and brown ones are more complex...those are the ones that don't load. Its not just a matter of changing the color. They only show up in the content library. I still can find no info on this little "scroll" icon in the content image library.
The scroll icon means that there is a DAZ Studio-optimized file as well as a Poser file, and when you load the Poser file it will apply the DS-optimized version. What you need to do is load the clothing item first, then make sure the clothing is selected in the Scene pane before applying the alternate color/pattern/style.
Oh, thank you! I NEVER would have guessed that I'd have to reapply the clothing or what the scroll icon means. Is there some place in the documentation that talks about this. I've seriously been looking to find an answer for a couple of hours.
Also, is there a way to apply hair that comes with Daz Studio to apply, or do I have to buy hair separately?
Thanks again.
Deborah
The "Genesis Starter Essentials", "Genesis 2 Female Starter Essentials", and "Genesis 2 Male Starter Essentials", which come free with DAZ Studio or with the DSON Importer for Poser, all include some hair and clothing options, but most hair you would need to buy separately.
Okay, thanks.
Any pointers on where to find the previous discussion documented?

Thanks, but that still is completely opaque. Talks about Poser vs. Daz formats but I see nothing about the scroll icon or needing to load a base first and then another one. Still confusing, but at least making some progress now!
The scroll icon doesn't in itself mean you need to load something else, it just means that you will get a native file (in this case material settings) instead of the Poser file when you double-click. The problem you are having would be the same even if the DS files weren't there - before you can apply settings, in this case materials, you need to have the item they apply to, clothes and skates, loaded and selected. This is usually clearer with native DAZ Studio content as the items will be in one folder and the settings will be in a "materials" or similar sub-folder of that, but in Poser items are split across the different libraries (that used to be mandatory, and is still the usual delivery method even though recent Poser versions can have the materials in the same folder as the models if desired).
Still pretty new myself, one thing I have found; which makes no sense to me; is if you drop and drag an conforming Item onto v4; it often behaves better than if you select Vic and Merge into the scene. I know that's not exactly your issue, but I think its tangential in terms of how to get content to behave as expected. I've found this program to be not at all Naïve user friendly; but well worth hanging in there in the end; if the learning curve is steep the end results are very good. :) BB.
Thanks @Richard and @Blackbirdx61. Yes, not terribly clear, but have figured it out now. Still found nothing in the documentation about this. I've had Poser for a while, but find the 'realism' in Daz to be superior for what I'm looking to do. They both have a steep learning curve, though!
I also find the Daz web site to be utterly confusing. I searched for Victoria 4 and it turned up some 2000 items on something like 60 pages...no sort of hirearchy. The main characters should or bundles should be separate from all of the accessories. Even using the filters there are hundreds of results, and scrolling page after page is mind numbing...almost like there is an intentional effort to confuse one into purchasing more items! Clever business model giving the program away for free and charging for content, however the organization of that content leaves MUCH to be desired!!
Here are my skaters for a first try. Not too unhappy with it, but still will come back for tweaking. I'm using this in a book chapter to illustrate the principle of what is referred to as the "moment of inertia" or resistance to rotation. This is mass moment of inertia. Area moment of inertia applies to beams and is effectively a similar concept. The arrows I did in Illustrator.
