MD11 is out ... Anybody tried it?

marblemarble Posts: 7,500

I have Marvelous Designer 8 and I can still get a discount for the new version 11 if I wish. However, despite many false starts, I have not made use of MD8 as I would have wished so I am somewhat reluctant to splash out on the upgrade fee unless there are some compelling new features which will tempt me to make some clothes for my characters.

I'd be interested to see how others find the new version and their opinions on whether it is a significant upgrade.

....for a moment my geek side took over as I thought this was a thread about aviation (there was a large tri-jet transport known as the MD 11 which was a successor to the DC-10).

Fell out of touch with Clo and Marvelous Designer over the years (I have a very old personal licence) as it just got too expensive to update, particularly since they went to a subscription only setup...

It ist very fast, that is what i thought first. still it slows down my workflow at the moment, because there are some small gltiches like when you select something in 2d window, you have to click on the same item in 3d Window as well to make the gizmo appear (it does not appear automatically). So, small annoying bugs. I think it would be hell of a fast thing (for example: If i pressed on pin selection box, MD10 had a few seconds to switch to the Wireframe view for selectkon, MD11 has almost no lag). I can not tell you about the new things, as i did not dig that deep already. But it looks stable and fast with some small issues that will hopefully be fixed soon.

If you come from MD8, you would have tons of features implementes in MD9 and 10, that are really really neat. Topstiches to make the cloth look really good, the fast and very good retopology tool (for those that don't have zbrush or don't want to take everything over first). If you intend creating garment for DAZ on a regular base, i can suggest the update i guess, just for the already implemented and working stuff that came along since MD8.

Sorry - I usually avoid shortening words to acronyms but I was feeling lazy today. At least I spelled it out in the post.

I will not go the subscription route. They still allow for an upgrade of the permanent license but I think that version 11 is the last one so I better make my mind up this time.

As said, no doubt it's faster and has new features. It will get updates and bug fixes to the upgraders free for 1 year. It costs $122 if your own MD10. It's significantly faster than MD8 and MD 10. It's the last time you can upgrade. You can no longer buy perpetual licenses. You can download the past perpetual version if you don't like a new version you upgraded to or HW requirements conflict.

Yep, it is $200 to upgrade from MD8 (60% discount) so I might just do so which will push me to make more use of it (hopefully).

@Marble, thanks. I forgot I had upgraded last year to MD10, so I just upgraded to MD11. $122.00. After I finish a massive project I am working on, I have to get back into my MD tutorials and really make use of it.

Now if DAZ would create a bridge to MD, that would be sweet.

...when Marvelous designer first cam out I felt finally, clothing creation software that was intuitive compared to using a traditional modelling programme.  I worked in theatrical costuming and MD spoke a language I already understood. Wish I could have been able to afford updating (stopped at ver 3). Before 11 was released and there was a sale on the Personal Perpetual licence for 10, but it was still beyond my means and no longer supported Windows 7.

May I ask how much you used MD to make clothes - even going back to when you bought your version? I think that what puts me off is the process of switching between the two applications and that goes for something like Blender too, even with the new bridge options between DAZ Studio and Blender. The process is still far from seamless. With MD, I'd love to be able to just pose in DAZ Studio, send to MD to drape and send back again to render. If dForce draping was remotely comparable to MD I would be happy but, sadly, it is so far behind as to be like comparing me (a 70 year old with a heart condition) to Usain Bolt in his prime.

Again, I just wonder how many regular users (not PAs) use MD to make and drape clothing for use in DAZ Studio. And if they do, what is a typical workflow?

...only a few simple outfits (the most complex being a set of bib overalls as there were none for female charaters available back in the Gen 4 days).  While again, I saw Marvelous Designer a significant step up from traditional modelling software for clothing design at the time (I had Hexagon which would crash if you blinked at the screen) MD was still pretty limited and basic in it's early form.  Though easier to comprehend than Blender with that rogrammes cryptic cumbersome UI back then, getting finished clothing to fit and work in Daz was another issue.  Also, the finished product didn't seem to be as good as what was in the store at the time.  One of the major issues was cloth thickness which was "paper thin".  This was finally addressed in later versions (I believe MD 8 or 9 but by then I was out of the upgrade loop and a new licence was ridiculously expensive) . Modelling programmes had tools to address this which the early versions of MD didn't and taking an MD garment into Hexagon to fix that was a lesson in frustration due to it's (Hexagon's) instability..

Fortunately I bought my personal licence for MD during a special introductory sale and got a great deal on the first upgrade so I wasn't out much (particularly compared to Hexagon which cost 149$ when I bought it).

The auto fitting features are pretty amazing in MD11, Just so you know you can just use a throw away email to make as many free trails as you like, so give it a try for a month and see if it is worth it. It is definitely an upgrade just depends on if you think it is worth the sub fees over the 1 time fee.

I would never go for subscription - not for anything. I've just cancelled my only subscription software (LastPass - changed to the free BitWarden password manager). So I would only consider upgrading my perpetual license which is MD8 at the moment. I am sorely tempted to do so but am concerned that I might spend another $200 only for it to sit on my drive begging for me to use it.
