Question on Weight mapping

Something probably quite simple that I just did not figured yet. 

While Weight mapping, why does one bone wieght map influences the child or parents bone's weight maps that are overlapping with to the one I am modifying/ creating. Can I disable this? What's the work around? 

I just keep going over to this bone, then that bone and back again, oop now the other side is messed up.

    I don't weight paint in Daz Studio all that much, but based on my experience with Blender, you want to search for "Normalizing weights".

    You should always end up with a total of 100% among the involved bones - that is why changing the weight on one bone, will change the weight on the remaining bones.

    Okay, so I applied too much weight on one map, got it.

    What does the "normalize map" option on right-click does? Can it help manage this phenomenon?

    Honestly, I don't know what 'normalize maps' do.

    The documentation says "Force a re-normalization of the maps to get rid of problem areas.", and I read that as if something is messed up too much, it will recalculate the weigth maps, based on nearest bones, similar to how an unweigthed mesh is handled.

  • In a normalised map, which is the default for joint weight maps, the total weight on any given vertex for any given map type must be 1. If you add weight in one place it must be taken away elsewhere - generally weight istaken from the children and added to the parent, as I recall. You can turn normalisation off, in Tool settings with the Node Weightmap Brush active, but then vertices with a ttoal weight greater than 1 will be over-responsive while weights under one will lag when bones higher up the hierarchy are moved.
