Camera Issue

Hello,

I have a small problem with a camera. There might be a simple solution, but I cant find it. The question is: Is there a way to point a moving camera on one target?

Example: If I put a camera inside a car (drivers view), I parent it to the car, so it does all movements of the car. But if I use "point at" to point it on traffic lights, it gets parented to the traffic lights and not to the car any more. One solution might be the frame by frame adjustments, but I hope there is a better one.

Thanks for answers.

Are you sure the parenting is definitely being changed? That shouldn't happen; how exactly are you doing it? One thing that might be happening, though, is that "point at" targets the centre of the object. This can be awkward, especially if the object centre isn't where you expect it to be. I assume you want to point at the lights at the top of the traffic lights?

One common workaround for this situation is to create a null, place it at the exact part of the traffic lights you want, then set the "point at" on the camera to the null.

Hey, thanks for the quick answer. I just checked it again, and I figuered out, that the lights and the car belong to the same group. So the camera does. If I remove the lights from the group, the camera stays parented to the car and pointed to the lights. So far so good, but now the camera is rotating while nearing the traffic lights. Do you know what I might have done wrong or a fix for that?
By the way: That fix with the Nullobject was very helpful too, because the center was -as you said- not where the lights are.

I'm not sure what's happening there. I don't use Groups much, and I don't think I've ever used them with Point At. All I can suggest, unless someone comes into this thread with more info, is to open a support ticket — you might have stumbled on a quirk in Point At behaviour.

Nulls are very useful, you'll find yourself using them in surprising ways, especially in cases like this where Point At needs a bit of a helping hand.
