Need Mac monitor help

it used to be that when using two monitor on the Mac when sitting side by side the workflow appeared as one allowing an application pane to appear to flow across from one screen to the second as though it was just an extension of video real estate. This was lost somewhere along the way with the various up OS updates. Now when dragging something from one monitor to the second the item must me either in one or the other but not both. I'm told ththe original functionallity it can still be reinstated but I forget how. Does anybody know how this is done?

    I'm on Catalina on a MacBook Pro and I don't have an extra monitor so I can't test it for you.

    Googling suggests System Preferences -> Mission Control -> turn off "Displays have separate Spaces".
