Face groups

I am currently rigging a prop for daz studio.

When I read tutorials on rigging (years ago), most said to assign all polygons not being used in your rigging, to one face group (default for example).

The object I imported before I started rigging had 4 different face groups.

Default was one of them, and a few others that were numbered basically.

I was wondering if anyone could tell me if there would be any benefit to assign all "unused" polygons to one group. (besides keeping things tidy)

Comments

  • groups can be useful, but they are not essential (and daz Studio does have a means to edit them). Face groups

    • can help with figure set up - when creating a new figure, if you assign the groups to bones then the bones will be placed inside the boundign box of the group
    • can help with weight-editing - you can fill each group with 100% weight for the matching bone
    • can help with posing - assign the group as a bone's selection group and clicking on it will select the bone (by default only if the figure it selected)
  • Great, thank you for replying and for the info.

I mainly use them for weight editing myself.
