using props over a figure

Good day all.

I've found some blood props, they are various splat of blood, I'd like to use them in my project.

The main problem is that if I import the props in the scene, well, then are "detached" from anything, so the basically float in the middle of the scene, I can adjust the onse that goes on the walls or ground manually, but I cannot figure out how to properly use them on the figures I've done.

I've try this things:

Dragging the props on the part of the figure I'd like to "put them on" like "the head" seems not working, a popup window appear: "autofit blood props" there are two options, the first is:

what figures was the item originally designed for:

and

what type of item is it?

I've tryed every combination of the above choices, but all the times the blod props "goes" in front of the figure, floating mid air, and seems to be "attached" to "abdomen lower". Somehow the props seems to be "morphed" to fit the part I've dragged to, so, for example is a bit spherical in case I dragged it on the head... but then I struck there, the prop is linked to the abdomen and seems to move accordingly.

I've tryied some other random thing but without success, probably because I don't know how is called the action I'm doing... can someone please point me in the right direction? Maybe I'm doing something totally wrong, don't know.

I'm new to Daz and 3d in general, so maybe I'm simply lacking some terminology that could help me find some tutorial about this...

Thanks in advance.

Autofitting is designed for things like clothes and hair, that are rigged, meaning that they have bones for movement and are weight-mapped so that the right parts move in the right way when the bones are adjusted. Autofitting isn't a great option for a static prop like a blood splatter, which might not work very well even if rigged. The process of autofitting will create bones if none exist, which accounts for the deformations you're experiencing. You could try parenting the blood splatter to the figure, by right-clicking on the blood splatter in the scene pane and selecting "change parent", then selecting the part of your figure you want to parent it to. This is make the blood splatter follow the motion of whatever part you selected without deformation, which could potentially cause problems like the blood splatter disappearing inside the figure, inside clothing, or what have you, depending on how the figure is posed. In other words, there may not be a perfect solution for what you're trying to do, but some approaches will work better than others.

A better approach might be texture based, using a product like any of the following:

    https://www.daz3d.com/blood-splash-for-genesis-8

    https://www.daz3d.com/dega-extreme-wound-decals

    https://www.daz3d.com/sy-a-big-mess-for-genesis-8

    https://www.daz3d.com/skin-doctor--blood-and-bandages-for-genesis-8-males

    https://www.daz3d.com/iray-grungeworx

Some of these use Iray decals, which are not the most intuitive to use, but once you figure them out, they can be quite effective for the type of effect you're trying to achieve.

  • OH, that's interesting, thanks a lot for these informations!

So, basically, when I found things like props, they are meant to be used only in the scene, and not on figures, is that right?

Figures are always(*) decorated through textures and such (* always is never always, of copurse).

  • Props may be used for figures, a lot of tools and weapons are props, but if something would need to flex with the body then it neds to be a fitted figure or handled via texturing. Where were you dragging and droping? Just doing it in the list in the Scene pane shouldn't trigger AutoFit.

  • I dragged the prop from the list from the content library to the scene, dropping it directly into the scene, well over the head (highlighted).

but I had the same result by right click on the imported prop and select "fit to, or change parent"

  • In that case it's already set up as a Daz studio figure and you may well be able to AutoFit it - you just need to know which figure it was made to fit. Which prop is it?
