What happens during "optimizing images" that causes tdlmake to run out of memory? This happened a few times, usually when I try to merge an existing scene with cross generational content into a new one with gen6 content.
we're talking like 40-50 gigs of space get taken in the DAZ Studio temp folder?

Tdlmake is generate mipmaps of the original images. Mipmaps are progressively smaller resolution versions of the original that are used on objects that further back, and therefore smaller in display to reduce stretching/shrinking appearance. If you created reduced resolution versions of your texture images (most of them are 4000 x 4000 which is much bigger than they need to be) fewer mipmaps will be generated.
