How do material files work in Daz3d?

Where do I find the original images of materials (to edit them in gimp)? I am particularly aiming to create overlay images on those materials to use them on figures. I find the layered image editor in Daz to be extremely slow and annoying so that's not an option. When I browse to the location of material files I only see.duf files and their low res images

Thanks

The maps are usually in a sub-folder of Runtime/Textures corresponding to the product.

If you installed the product through Daz Install Manager, right-click on its entry in the Installed tab and select Show Installed Files - that will give you a list, with links you can click to find the files. If you installed through Daz Studio itself, right-click on the product icon and select the browse to folder location option (I think, somethign like that) and you can just dig down into the /Runtime/Textures/ folder to find the maps. You can also use the Editor tab of the Surfaces pane to see the path in the pop-up that appears when the mouse is over the micro-thumbnail next to a mapped property.

Work on a copy of the map, otherwise an update might replace it with the original, and bear in mind that you cannot share textures that are made by modifying existing textues 9escpept, with limitations, in the case of Merchant Resource sets).
