So... I'm currently without a credit card - somebody charged to it more in a single transaction that I do in two months. That means no March Madness for me for a week, more or less.

I could use some cheering up - and I could use some judges for this month's Challenge. Like my credit card, I don't have any judges right now...

Sorry to hear about the CC problem. There have been reports of that in here lately. I would suggest that you use PayPal rather than put your card number into the system here. The less places that info is exposed, the better.

I can't judge. I have a terrible time picking winners. Over at pfdlives.com they have weekly and monthly voting and sometimes they give us four votes...and I spend a lot of time and still can't narrow it down sometimes. :red:

I tried to check out pfdlives and it says that registration is not open. :-(

Thanks for looking into it-- I found out through looking at cached versions that the freebie area does not require registration... woot! I wouldn't have thought so.

So far what I've found is that it is by invitation only. I have to find out more. It is a measure to keep out spammers and other unsavory types. It seems to have worked well for them. It's a very friendly place!

Ah, you left out rhubarb pie and banana cream pie.

Semi-serious questions ahead: Do G4/A4/S4 count as morphs of V4, or as base figures? They have their own CR2s, but you have to have V4 to use them. Second question: Is the contest considered a commercial use, meaning non-commercial only items not allowed? Sorry if these have been asked before.

I hate to be a pain and don't wish the thread to degenerate into a debate over technical details (I really haven't been lying awake at night thinking up new and difficult questions for you), Rob, but ...

I have a question regarding the visibility of automaker's trademarks in the renders. These are often prominent on the real life autos, and frequently are recreated on 3D models of the vehicles. The one I'm using is a case-in-point. Is it acceptable to show these badges/logos/marques in the renders?

If the answer is "no". I can work around it in one of two ways:
    1. Crop the render to eliminate or obscure the offending part. This would be simple enough, but would potentially mess with the aesthetics of the image by producing a less desirable aspect ratio. I also assume that this would not be considered "postwork".
    2. This would involve postwork - a couple of minutes in Photoshop and its gone. However, postwork isn't allowed, even if it isn't used to enhance the render, so this would be a no go.

Before anyone suggests I tweak the surfaces tab to address the issue, I tried everything and the best I could do was to make it less noticeable, but still quite obvious. I suppose I could resort to redoing the UV maps, but that's a bridge too far for the purposes.

Anyway, I'd appreciate a ruling, when you have the time.

    Thanks.

Update: Welllll, after a lot of looking around the internet on the subject, I have found, not surprisingly, that the automakers do frown on any and all unauthorized use of their trademarks, which even include the model names. Basically no unauthorized use allowed. So the logo has got to go. The only question that remains is how I will be allowed to remove it. ????

BTW, it is somewhat ironic that I happen to have the exact same make, model and year of vehicle parked in my driveway right now. Maybe I should remove the logo from that.

Eureka! I finally gave the Surfaces tab one last go and managed to find the right combination of settings to make the marque disappear. So, nevermind, I guess.

Okay, now that I have all my ducks in a line (I think), here's my take on the theme.

    Title: The Lesson
a.k.a Maybe you can drive my car

Rendered in DAZ Studio 4.6 with 3Delight

"... cars parked along the sides of the street like this, you need to keep your wits about you. You never know when some idiot is going to pull out suddenly without looking or signaling, or open their door in front of you. And you see those kids on the sidewalk? You never know when one is going to dart out between the cars, to chase a ball or something. Or a dog. Or a cat. Now up ahead you can see a stop sign. You need to come to a complete stop there. Not a rolling stop, a complete stop. Its a four way stop, so you need to know who has the right-of-way if other vehicles are at the intersection. If you arrive at the intersection first, you have the right-of-way. The vehicle on the right always has the right-of-way, if both vehicles arrive at about the same time. That means if a vehicle arrives at the same time to your left. you have the right-of-way. But you can never trust that the other driver knows that, so you you need to watch they don't pull out first. Now we'll be turning right here, so signal your turn ..."

SIXDS and SLIMER, not sure why your questions didn't get a response from our always-alert host -- he's probably in court trying to prove that he never ordered $4,000 worth of blenders (or Blender plug-ins).

SLIMER, I've never seen the other Generation 4 figures treated as V4 morphs, but the DAZ figures always end up counted as something other than a freebie, so just go with that until someone else can be more specific. The Freebie Challenge, like most 3D art contests, is NOT considered commercial, so that restriction on models doesn't apply.

SIXDS, you solved your problem in a terrific render, but you could have located the texture mat for the car logo, "disguised" it in Photoshop (like VW becoming WW, for example), and reimported it on its own primitive BEFORE the render. But I've never given car logos a second thought -- we're promoting the car, in a way, and if the modeller didn't worry, why should you?

Up to Rob, Music and/or Chohole to make a final call, of course.

MUSIC, oh -- a PIE FIGHT! The only problem with that is that DAZ is still pretty pissed off about the mess we made last time. Even the president of DAZ Inc got wailed on.

Thanks for the kudoes, DanaTA. and Dorseyland.

As for editing the texture map, that was my first thought, too. There was just one small problem - there wasn't one! The model was not created for use in DAZ Studio, but the creator made it available in .obj format, so I could import it. But the textures didn't come through properly. I opened it in Silo to see if I could find the problem, but it opened there exactly as it should have, textured and all. Looking at the textures, only three actual texture maps had been used for select parts (licence plate, rear lights, one colour map) The rest were all procedural, including, surprisingly, the logo. He/she must have somehow managed to create detailed material zones in the shape of the logo. Anyway, I wasn't prepared to delve too deeply into reworking the model for the sake of a render, but maybe another time. The UV map for it is one of those multi-layered monsters you sometimes see (3DS, maybe?). In any event, there's always more than one way to skin a (reference deleted in deference to Wendy :)) with this stuff.
