Possible Bug? Keyframing without Keyframes

I had a scene with static elements except for a camera which did a "walk trough" the scene. The entire animation was 1800 frame.
For reasons that I will not get into here, I decided to break the animation down into two individual scenes of 900 frames.
The first half was really easy to do...I just changed the number of frames to 900 and "save as" the scene.
The second half was a little more difficult. I check out the position and orientation of the camera at the 900 frame. Then I trimmed the sequence to 900 frames and removed all the key frames for the camera. Lastly I applied to recorded position and orientation for the camera to the 1st frame. This resulted, as expected, in a static camera in the given position and orientation. All good.
However, as soon as I introduce new key frames (beyond the first) to move or re-orient the camera the animation acted like I had a key frame at 900 (end of the animation) which was the same as the first frame. Thus, for example, when I added a key frame at frame 30 with a new position and orientation I would have expected the camera to remain at that position and orientation for the rest of the animation but it actually did not - it animated from the position and orientation at key frame 30 back to the position and orientation at key frame 1.
It was acting just like there was a key frame at 900 (or beyond?) even though I double checked that there was no such key frame. Maybe when I reduce the animation down to 900 frames first and then cleared the camera key frames which left the key frames beyond the animation length still in memory?
In any case, when I saved the scene with the reduced (900) frames. Created a new scene and loaded the saved scene, the problem corrected itself...once again indicating that this might have been the work of key frames no longer in the animation (which were removed from memory when the scene was reloaded).
Has anyone noticed similar issues? Should this be reported as a bug? It seems to me that applying key frames which are no longer in the length of the animation is a bug, no? >:(

Perhaps this thread will explain some of it.
