DAZ 4.16 update - Help for L&F and installation issues?

To anyone that knows, was part of the Beta, DAZ teachers, and Tech folks; I've been reading through the update lists for 4.16, but that is not what I would have liked from DAZ-- a concise list of improvements from 4.16. What would have been great would be a list that has categories and the improvements within those categories. For me; I would zoom in on categories that contained any improvements with the Lost & Found and product installation. Do any of you know if 4.16 improved either, or both, of those areas that needed improvements?

Comments

  • Lost and Found is a product issue, not a DS issue.

  • I should add that the beta branch, 4.16.1.x, does have a fix for the issue of items that were explicitly set as Lost and Found still showing as such after being de-categorised - now they should be removed from the category in Smart Content, the presets tabs of property panes, and other database-driven views: they will, however, still show there in the Content Library as that neds to show hidden categories to allow editing.

  • Hi, Richard. Yes, it makes sense to show everything in Content Library and I wouldn't have it any other way. It does sound like some thought toward the L&F did happen for 4.16-- from what you're telling me. That's good news. As long as you're here, Richard, were there any improvements that might help the communication between DIM and DS-- therefore aiding the installation process? How about "Connect?" Can it now be run in combination with DIM for thumbnails, without interference? Don't get me wrong, I'm not even thinking about going backward from a full-on DIM-only install, but if there was some improved software communication that affects "install" I'd like to know. Even if all I would do at this point is to toast the builders.

I don't think there were any other chnages that will have an impact on your concerns.

  • Well OK. Thanks. I'll stop digging through the update lists. It wasn't yielding anything fruitful.

You mentioned here and sometime before that artists or DAZ set some art to fall into the L&F category. Why would anyone do that? By the way, as I recall there is an "Unassigned" category, so why not use that one instead of the L&F?

I'm not sure it was deliberately done, I think it's older content where there was a glitch in the set up process or exporting of the metadata, so something that is meant to be temporary in the absence of other settings isntead became permanent.

Unassigned is the old catch-all for non-categorized items, so PA's that overlooked a file during categorizing would have it end up in Unassigned when the product shipped. Unassigned was quite useful because once you assigned the file to a category yourself it would disappear from Unassigned, making it a nice clean way to keep track of stuff that needed categorizing.

At some point (I don't recall which version) they introduced the user/vendor metadata separation and at the same time Lost and Found, and dropped Unassigned. That's when the wheels started to come off. Files that hadn't been categorized no longer had an Unassigned to go to and instead went into Lost and Found. That wouldn't have been a problem except it was the vendor metadata => the user couldn't change it => the user was stuck with Lost and Found until the PA shipped correct metadata => never. To add injury to injury, the bug (which Richard suggests has finally been fixed) made the "hide vendor metadata" not work. So even if an OCD metadata user like me decided to hide all the vendor metadata and use only my own, DAZ Studio wouldn't let me do so. The resulting impact to my workflow has caused me no end of grief for some years now.

DAZ makes the metadata not the PA's

User conflict over L&F-- I did know about that. Thanks to you kind folks I now do. Cridgit, thanks for caring enough to be as thorough as you can be. Hats off to you. Tossing hands into the air is something I cannot abide by either.

I am enjoying the stark difference between the last two user Avatar thumbnails-- pasta and anti-pasta.
