I saw some discussion here surrounding Blender 3 Alpha. This video reivews the upcoming release. The part (02:31) about Cycles and AMD/Apple/Linux systems are worth noting. Until I saw this video, I ddn't grasp what the Asset Browser someone was referring me to; I'm quite excited about it now!

I've been experimenting with both the alpha and beta builds on my Linux box. Cycles is about 20% slower, but the results are better.
That doesn't sound right. Cycles-X is vastly faster.
Unfortunately, I'm using the new but still now so antiquated AMD GCN Generation 5 Vega 8 integrated into a Ryzen 7 5700G APU but maybe next year I can upgrate my APU to a APU that supports RDNA2 so I can use Cycles-X.
I did a few test animation renders for alpha and beta. When it was much quicker, the shadows were really horrible. Changing a few settings made for slightly better shadows than I have with 2.9x, but was slower.
I do have an Nvidia 960 GTX card, but an AMD Threadripper 2920x CPU, so I'm not sure if that makes a difference. Running Linux Mint.
