A quick zBrush Question

Can anybody help? In zBrush, when using the smooth option, the "Focal Shift" slider only snaps to -100, 0 and 100.
For 3 versions now, I just can't get a smooth gradient setting between, by using the mouse only.

Is there a hidden feature to unlock that slider, or is it a bug?

Release the shift key after you start moving the slider, then after setting the focal shift value hold the shift key down again to use the smooth brush with the new setting.

I think that this was a deliberate change as the most useful values (for stylus users) are -100, 0 and 100, but I can see how this would be annoying for anyone using a mouse.

  • Galien is right; this only happens when you keep the shift key pressed. But I don't understand why you'd even do that in the first place? If you press the spacebar you'll get your tool palette which includes the focal shift. Or you can press 'F' (though I am not sure anymore if this is actually a vanilla binding (I heavily customized my ZBrush setup)) and then you can change it without the need for pressing shift as well.

So yeah, if you need to press shift to open this setting then my suggestion would be to use the spacebar instead, or simply change the keyboard binding, it's really extremely easy but just in case:

    • Open your Draw palette and find the slider.
    • Press control+alt (and keep these pressed) and click on the slider.
    • Then release the combo and press the key (or key combination) which you want to assign (as mentioned I'm using 'f').
    • Done! ;)

After that just press 'f' (or whatever you set up) and you're all set.

    Hope this could also help!

  • O.K. Thanks for your help :-)
