Cloud being compromised

Should we be concerned regarding the latest security flaw for software using the cloud?

Here in Canada, the Canada Revenue Agency went off line last night as a precaution.  I'm wondering about Daz's use of cloud for their assets.

  • "Cloud" isn't a thing, there are various and sundry tools that provide cloud services. if this is the issue flagged in anothr thread it affects Apache, I'm not sure how broadly. Daz has certainly been active in patching the software they use in the past so I would expect this is still true, if they are even using the affected software and doing so in a way that does not block the attack from the outset.

It affects any software that uses the log4j logging framework. According to a blog post, Cloudflare is taking measures to protect their customers  (including Daz) as best they can https://blog.cloudflare.com/inside-the-log4j2-vulnerability-cve-2021-44228/

  • I asked about this and am told that the Daz site does not use log4j at all and so isn't impacted by this vulnerability.

Swamp gas from a weather balloon was trapped in a thermal pocket and reflected the light from Venus.

Now just look at my "pen" and wait for the flash.

Are you sure, some years ago one of our IT guys told me that I had no understanding of current computer technology, when I asked him whether our servers were on SSD drives, because virtual servers do not need any hardware...

I hope you straightened him out?  Or was he terminally kinked?

I did, and somehow he suddenly changed his mind about giving me a new computer with W7 on it (about two years before end of W7 support), which he had been fighting against for a year.
Maybe the fact that some big bosses were included as recipients, had something to do with itcheeky

Is it easier for a cloud to lie, or for you to lie on a cloud?

Canada Revenue went off line because they were afraid someone was going to pay their income tax.

IT people come in all levels of technical expertise. I remember quite a few years ago (long before cloud computing) the company I worked for bought a new mainframe and they ran tours to show it off to the rest of us. I asked the expert showing us around what the capacity of the hard drives was, his reply was we don't know, we haven't filled one up yet.

I hope he kept his bit-bucket handy for when the drive does fill up.surprise

I used to empty the bit-buckets in my college's keypunch room.  I had  few bags of bits too for a while, for some prank or other.  However, I think they just ended-up burned.indecision

Last I heard, the clouds were in a fog as to whether or not they'd been compromised or not.

That's a nice title, thank you:)

  • I'm too paranoid to store stuff on the cloud. Pssst, Microsoft has your BitLocker recovery code. This is for those who bought Laptops and prebuilt systems. Unless you chose to store it there.

Yeah... My trusted hardware supplier for twentysome years, retired a few years ago, he had started in the 70's and we often talked about things related to IT, especially when I was still managing all things computer at previous companys - His comment about the younger generation of IT guys was that their knowledge tends to be quite superficial, especially if they got into IT just for the career.

That's why I am using a Mac with FileVault... so MS does not have the recovery code, but Apple. Ooops. same thing, different villain.
