Daz Studio won't start

Okay guys. All of a sudden, NOTHING. A few days ago everything was working fine. Now neither my 64-bit nor 32-bit version will launch. No splash screen, no error message, NOTHING. I even downloaded and re-installed the 64-bit version and still nothing.

If I have the Task Manager open I can see the process pop up in there for a minute but then it just vanishes. Running Win8.1 here on a Core i7 machine, never had any problems until now.

Ideas?

For something like that you need to look in your Event Viewer log files.

Generally speaking, it sounds as if security was tightened on your machine and it's now preventing DAZ Studio from running. You can trying running as Administrator and if that don't working removing, re-installing, and running as administrator.

Sometimes embedded trojans and viruses can be at fault though that's rare.

re-installed Daz 64-bit and tried running as administrator. same thing. as for removing I can't. it doesn't show up in the list of installed applications in Add/Remove.

What firewall software, if any, are you running?

    AV?

It almost sounds like something has quarantined it.

just the built-in Windows 8 firewall. no idea why it would have suddenly quarantined it. also wouldn't removing/reinstalling it have fixed that?

okay...got it running but I had to make a new user account and it runs from there. what on Earth could be causing it not to run on one account but run fine on the other?? I'd really prefer not to have to log into a whole other account to use Daz.

Usually, it doesn't. unless it is in conjunction with some kind of major security update...but since the latest version of Windows here is 7, I don't know if there have been any of those. If it was a 3rd party firewall, then they would have their own update schedule and could do it over night.

definitely not running anything other than standard Windows firewall and antivirus. working using the new account but it's a royal PITA because all of my other stuff is under the other account...

there has to be some way to figure out what's happening. is there any way to log what's going on when it starts up?

The log file generated by DS does include a lot of start up info, but if it fails it may not get written to...the log is in your DAZ folder in your AppData (not the content folder...the other one...not sure of the actual full path, but it should be something like users/your_user/appdata/Daz 3D/Studio4.

    Got me stumped...

I'm still going with some update...either OS or security software blocking it. But if you've are just running the vanilla Windows security software, I don't see that as doing it.

exactly. and I'm far from a computer-newb. I know pretty much every OS on the planet inside and out, I know my software and hardware backwards and forwards and I cannot see a single thing that would prevent a program from running under one Windows account yet allow it to run under another. Possibly some kind of preference files got messed up...but a re-install of that software should correct the issue.

Unless it was account permissions....but they just don't change, overnight...unless you're rooted. And most rootkit attacks I've dealt with don't actually prevent anything, except maybe security software, from actually operating...they want to remain hidden and transparent.

wow. three days and still no reply from Daz. I'm guessing they're stumped too. This really sucks. I'm having to switch back and forth between accounts to get anything done and that is a massive pain when you've got stuff so well established under one. No way in hell am I migrating accounts or re-installing windows for one piece of software that just refuses to run under my regular friggin account. Man this is aggravating.

Have you opened a support ticket? The forums are user-to-user, not DAZ support.

yes, that's what I'm saying. even Daz is stumped.

finally heard back from them but it's all the same stuff I've already tried. the ONLY thing different between when it was running and now is that I ran a system sweep with System Mechanic and cleaned up a bunch of junk registry stuff and other types of clutter. Even thought about that and restored to a previous registry but still nothing.

The part that's got me scratching my head is that it works in another account...which to me screams security/policy settings.
