Is Genesis 8.1 an HD figure out of the box?

I only have Genesis 8 figures with various Characters and HD Add-ons.

Is the Genesis 8.1 base figure considered an HD figure, with HD skin textures?

Looking at the Genesis figure in iray, with no add-ons, she seems fairly detailed.

Theer aren't HD and SD figures - theya re all the same base mesh with SubD applied to create additional polygons and smooth the mesh out. The HD morphs are able to move the additional vertices created by SubD, while SD morphs work on the base cage only before the SubD is applied. HD, as used here, has nothing to do with texture resolution.

To add to this..,

Does Victoria 8.1, for example, actually give you more abilities in posing, than does Victoria 8? Or is she simply a newer-look character.

Seems that I read that 8.1 mostly gives you more face-posing flexibilty, and that that is the key diffence between Genesis 8 and Genesis 8.1. 

So does that mean that in using Victoria 8, she is limited to the pose flexibilty of the previous Genesis 8 version? And thus does not get access to the extended 8.1 added facial flexibilties?

As far as the body is concerned, posing 8 and 8.1 are identical. G8 uses the PowerPose system for face posing, where you drag dots to control the facial bones. 8.1 has a reworked system, the 8.1 facial rig, which also controls the facial bones but in a different way. PowerPose affords you more artistic control over individual parts of the face, whereas the 8.1 facial rig uses industry standard FACS action units that look more realistic but are limited by how real human muscle groups work.

Genesis 8 also has a facial rig, sold separately. Apparently, people say you can also get PowerPose to work with 8.1, but I've never gotten it to work.

I honestly didn't realize that. Thought it was totally an asthetic thing for the skin surfaces only. Cool.

Hey, Margrave. Thanks for the additional clarification.

Genesis 8 also has a facial rig, sold separately. Apparently, people say you can also get PowerPose to work with 8.1, but I've never gotten it to work.

Would you happen to know what this product would be called in the store? I did a search for 'facial rig' and that return nothing in particular.

Victoria 8 and Victoria 8.1 are not connected - they are just the first Daz characters released for their versions of Genesis.

So, to follow up...

Is there an HD / extra skin detailing and surfacing for the Genesis Base Female and Male? Or does that only come with Character add-ons, such as Victoria? 

I ask because I'm doing side by side rendering here with Genesis Base Female, and Then Victoria 8 / HD, and Eva 8 / HD, and the Genesis base definitely has less skin pores, creases, etc., than do Victoria and Eva. So wondering can you actually get that extra surface detailing with just the Gensis Base Figures.

(...mostly. Some PAs recycle their skins for multiple figures.)

Generally, each figures has its own unique skin, which can be as large and as detailed as the PA wants to make it. The default Genesis 8 skins are alright, but Daz3D is a business. They don't give away the top shelf stuff for free. G8F is an appetizer to familiarize you with the program so you spend more money.
