Iray: New market for vendors?

Seems the forumites are gripped with Iray fever, and I'm no exception to the rule. Since the 4.8 Beta was released I've been toiling away with shaders and settings to see what wondrous things could emerge from the engine, and I've been suitably impressed as well.
Including Iray with Daz Studio is a pretty bold move, and easily one of the most exciting developments we've had in the software over the last couple of years. It's got a pretty strong launch so far, and hey we're not even out of Beta, so I'm confident it will go from strength to strength from here onwards.
So, with all this newfound power at our fingertips there's almost definitely going to be a big market for Iray shaders. There's a handy toolkit included with some of the most used materials but we're just chipping at the tip of the 'berg so to speak. DS does a great job at automatic conversions but it's not perfect and tools to quickly change some of the more advanced settings would likely sell like hotcakes.
It's still new, and still early days so a lot of us are likely still getting to grips with what Iray has to offer. That said, it would be great to see shader presets for Iray in the not too distant future. With every DS user now having access to an extremely powerful unbiased engine, there's going to be a lot of potential new customers looking to improve their renders, myself included!

Herald,
Shaders are my biggest concern. I have all of the fabricator shaders and a very large collection of presets derived from them. (One of the joys of fabrictor is that you can easily combine its template presets with your own texture jpegs.) A utility that automatically optimised all of these presets for Iray would definitely get my vote.
Cheers,
Alex.
Some vendors already include Luxus/Reality material settings for their products. So I am sure that we will see Iray presets soon. But it is a tough job for the vendors if they want to catch all the users needs. Now we have 3Delight, Luxus, Reality, Octane and Iray... and not to forget all the Poser users, who buy content here at the DAZ store.
I kinda wish more would include DZdefault to make going to other Engines easier
too many use 3Delight procedurals esp AoA SSS
just importing duf into carrara with those is a big fix let alone Octane render or export to iClone etc
Shaders are one of my biggest concerns as well. I'm still in heavy duty learning mode right now and no where near close to full comprehension. Or even partial comprehension for that matter. I think that as much automatic optimization is already built in to studio as they could. Don't forget that you can apply the Iray base shader over an existing one. Be sure to hold down ctrl key and click ignore textures. That also helps some. But there is no getting around that rather complex shaders will have to be tinkered with after you do that.
A quick way to get something similar would be to import a shader that was close to what you wanted into Shader Mixer.
This image was based on the Wood Mahogany shader...I just replace my texture for theirs and upped the bump mapping. certainly not optimised but it's a wip...
i wish some energy would go to ca shaders

This sounds like a variation on how I created the shader presets. I applied the fabricator base preset to a cube primitive, added my texture jpeg and then did a save as shader preset. Repeating this process on the hundreds of presets I have, using an iray shader preset as a base, would be a right royal pain in the gluteous maximus.
Cheers,
Alex.

Alex. With Shader Mixer once you have the basic set up you need it's a case of adjusting those parts you want to. You wouldn't need to keep reloading the original shader. Yes you would need to resave the presets each time you create a new one. That is part of creating shaders of any sort. It's possible that someone with the knowledge of scripts could come up with an easier way...it might even be possible to text edit the files as a batch somehow. I can't help with that as it's beyond my skill set.
