Can shadows from environmental lighting be controlled?

I have a scene based on an environment map (Easy environments: Sandstorm). Shadows cast by the environment lighting on a character in the scene are too dark.  Can these shadows be turned off or toned down?

    No.
You can rotate the dome, but that will rotate tthe map and items on the map

I hoped that would not be my only option. Rotate or Photoshop .....Hmmm! Thanks for your suggestion

maybe you could add an additional light to your scene, out of the focus of your camera. Choose an item of suitable geometrie, add an emissive shader and turn the light high.
(Examples are  at rendo, my experimental light objects). If you pose this light source above and behind your objects it should soften the shadows.
But alas it can be quite time consuming to adjust the right light color and intensity because there is no reliable preview for the shadows, so you have to render.

Change gamma settings on the environment map?

Thank you all for your suggestions. Dome rotation is a good compromise but I decided to render the empty sceene and use as a backdrop for the characters.
