Cartoonized for Genesis 8

Hello!

I don't know if this is the right forum (I think it is) to my question. I'm a newbie (that learnt a lot in a few days thanks to you all) with Daz, and my objective for now is to create comic strips using Daz (and as far as I could read in other posts, ComicLife 3 to add the balloons). Now, besides the ideas, I need characters, and I started to scour the store trying to find them. During this search, I found this:

https://www.daz3d.com/cartoonized-for-genesis-8-female

My question is:how good is it? It's certainly a LOT cheaper than buying lots of cartoon characters, but will the result be as good as a custom-made cartoon-shaped character?

It's a shame that the store doesn't have reviews. It would help a lot.

   Thanks!

    @alaltacc,

There are a number of folks who use Daz to generate assets for comic books. They achieve the toon look either through custom Daz iRay or 3Delight shaders, or take the photo real Daz render output and manipulate it in post. Here's a more detailed reply ... "Some of the Daz products they employ are VIsual Style Shaders, SketchyLineRenderer9000, and PWToon just to mention a few. Yet other use post-editing techniques with Photoshop or GIMP. Interested to see more? On the Daz Forum, you'll want to look into the More Non-Photorealistic Rendering threads part 1, part 2 and part 3. Edit: I forgot to add, check out the 3D Comic Book Tips and Pictures as well as the Welcome to Anime Manga Cafe threads."

    Hope that helps.

    Cheers!

Cridgit, and csaa, thank you! In the end, the entire Toons Generations 4 (male, female, clothing, hair) was at 50% discount, so I bought it all. Spending almost a hundred bucks is a good way of keeping me on track of what I'm planning to do ;-)))) The best part is that it's possible to "cartoonize" other Genesis 8 characters using Toon Generations 4, what will help me a lot! I'm having problems with the clothing materials not applying, but I'll try to figure it out tomorrow.

Csaa, I took note of the links and will take a look. Thanks!

@alaltacc   One way to add toon aspects to your characters is to go into Shaping (if you don't have it showing, go to Windows>Panes>Shaping and then dial in percentages of body morphs (shapes) from other exaggerated characters. You can choose head aspects and body aspects.  When shopping, try not to see a character for 100 percent what THEY are, think of what attributes they contribute to the morph dials. Look at Star 2.0 for example.  Happy tooning!

There are about 16 pages of comments and examples of what people have done using cartoonizer here: https://www.daz3d.com/forums/discussion/277496/cartoonized-is-awesome/p1

If you get the chrome extension for daz deals (see https://www.daz3d.com/forums/discussion/comment/7221746/#Comment_7221746), then it is easy to see if anyone has discussed a product that you are interested in, and also if they have posted an image to the gallery using the product. For example, the attached is what I see because of the add on. Then I click on discussions to find all the discussions, etc.

If you are on a budget it's the post processing that gives the comic book look, not the model geometry so much.

  • I'd just like to say that for making custom characters, the "Rectangle/Hourglass Body Shape" slider alone makes Cartoonized worthwhile even if you rarely touch the cartoon features.

Hi, I know you've bought the excellent Toon Generations 4, which has a great range of figures and ages to get you started. Good choice.

Yet, I don't see (after a quick glance) anyone answering one of your original questions - is Cartoonized any good? The answer, in my opinion is yes. It's not perfect, there will ne work to be done after depending on the exact look your after but it's a great, very solid starting point. I'd also recommend Stylized by 3D Universe, the same creator as Toon Generations 4. Stylized has become my go to for cartoon figures but TG4 and Cartoonized are close by. If you're genuinely commutted to cartoon characters, I'd recommend all of them if/when you have the spare cash.

At some point down the road, when you're more comfortable with Daz, I'd also recommend learning how to sculpt morphs in Blender but that's a whole different level. Time for that later. :-)

  • I love cartoonized and use it a lot when I want to add in that look.

Thank you all! I'll certainly take a look into Cartoonized in the near future, too. It looks excellent! And I took notes of all your suggestions. :-)

@alaltacc hello! I also created some shaders to achieve a specific cartoon style (Lichtenstein, Pop Art) - you can find them here if you're interested smiley
