DESTROYED! What happened? Genesis 8 Female Expressions update

The "Genesis 8 Female Expressions" update wiped out my work on nearly everything I am currently working on because it is a core product required for most of what I'm working on. I was working on my laptop and let it update before I started some lengthy renders. Something awful happened. I got one of those boxes that shows unlinked products. WHAT? So I delved into the usual troubleshooting methods. Nothing. Acum's razor took over and I gave into a simple solution. The update is flawed. I DID NOT UPDATE MY DESKTOP. So, please help. Tech tickets do work anymore, so I hope y'all have a solution. I need to turn back the clock on my laptop somehow. I uninstalled the product entirely as part of my troubleshooting. Now, the new package won't work and the original package is deleted. Wait, I still have it on my Desktop. Hm.

A cool feature of dropbox is to roll back not just a file but entire folder tree, it is one main reasons all my stuff including daz repository is on it. That sucks though can you give more details on what morphs were effected and how?

  • To answer your question, it affects every single female morph for Genesis 8. That product is a core plug-in. It's one of those products that pop up as a "Required" product if you buy many others. I am going to restore my "Download" folder from my Acronis backup. And definitely NOT update the "Genesis 8 Females Expressions" product until tech services tell me that it is ok to do so. Yes, I am going to create a ticket, although it seems like a waste of time. I am very unhappy with DAZ these days. Yes, they did create a fancy way to scroll through different face shapes for 8.1, but who really needs that? I suppose if you're making NFTs that can be advantageous, but what about all of the suggestions everyone has been making over these last two years? Come on. Some company is going to see DAZ as another Rome ready to fall to a young, eager, more innovative, company that finds a way to network with DAZ and then slowly steals DAZ thunder while DAZ isn't watching. DAZ needs to start by waking up their Tech services and by hiring more of them.

In general, if one hasn't experienced any problems with a product, there is no need to 'fix' it.

  • If you're new to DAZ and have never created anything using Genesis 8 Female, then sure, forget about it.

I meant, if one hasn't experienced any problems with a product, there is no need to 'update' it.

Those (metadata) updates have been notorious for decryption errors, which render the files/metadata unreadable for the installers or DS.

  • Copying the old files from my desktop didn't work for the laptop. So, I'm having to restore the entire laptop drive that I have DAZ installed on to return it to where it was before that update. Back to your note about updates. I always DO run the updates, because of the 8.1 improvements and adaptations. I really can't pick and choose. However, in this case, I should have done it differently. When I downloaded it and then tried to install it, but it failed, I should have stopped there; then re-installed it from the file that was already installed rather than attempting to troubleshoot it. Lesson learned. Now, if that happens again I know what to do. Moving forward on this one, if they tell me they're fixed it I'll try again. If I get the same message then no harm is done, I know what to do.

If you see an update, make a copy of the zip from the Downloads folder (assuming you don't want to copy the whole thing). if the update caues problems you can then repalce the updated zip with the original and, with DIM working offline, reinstall the original over the update.

It does seem that soem people hae been having issues with the update even downloading, I wonder if you manged to download but the file was in soem way crrupt or mispackaged.

  • I just discovered that once I try to load the new update the original goes away. Bummer. Just found that to be true on my Desktop installation. Now I'm restoring my "Download" folder to get that back. Just restoring the one, or two, files doesn't seem to work. I hope this works. If not I'll have to restore the entire disc as I'm doing with my laptop. Richard, do you know why that happened on my laptop? Why could I not just replace the two files into my Download folder? I do not keep the original Zipped file, just what is unzipped into the Download folder. Keeping both the zip file and the unzipped product to use when re-installing will take up twice the space. Keeping the install files is already a huge use of space.

  • Maybe the original Zipp file is in there somewhere. I didn't tell is to delete anything after installing. This is confusing.

  • Richard, since you are in with the DAZ in-crowd PLEASE impress them again with the fact that when they release an update it must be thoroughly vetted by some team members first before pushing it out to the masses. WE SUFFER as a result of things like this. Again, this seems like a lack of tech-team support.

  • OK. I found the original download  in my folder. When I tried to install the update it did seemingly remove the original but it didn't. Now, how do I reinstall it? I deleted the second file so there's only the zip file. It is not showing "Ready to Install in the DIM installation process tab. What am I missing here?

    so is this update borked?

I have seen another thread on it where it won't install, got it sitting in DIM and not willing to click install until I know

I tried it last night and it was bad, so I reverted to my backup. As usual, the readme has no information about what was updated. Better just leave it alone for now.

Looking in the manually downloaded file, nothing has changed other than the manifest and supplement files, and not sure what has changed there, if anything, as I do not have the immediately previous version to compare. None of the 8.1 morph files have been changed since 2020-12-18, and none of the regular 8 since before that. Interestingly, the metadata file has not been updated since the first release in 2017, but all items are Support Assets. Not sure how that affects the functionality, but I assume it was like that, and working properly, before this update.

Suspiciously, though, opening with 7-zip, I see values in the "Created" and "Accessed" fields, which are normally blank with all packages from DAZ.

Downloaded a fresh copy manually and the only dates referring to this year are the "Created" and Accessed" dates, the "Modified" date, although not quite the same as in a file from last April, are still close to their originals, attached a comparison of ...\Runtime\Support\

The differences in the modified dates are usually due to the time zone on the computer where the zip was created. You'll see that they are all exactly 7 hours different. UTC vs. MDT?

I just wrote a note saying that after restoring the files to my Download folder the "Missing..." files messages went away. I spoke too soon. After opening another file I found tons of those messages all pointing to the Genesis 8 Female Expressions product. So, I'm screwed until they fix this. RICHARD! HELP!

    WHAT IS HAPPENING at DAZ?

  • Screen capture of my error for the record. At this point, I cannot work on anything without having "Missing" file issues. Under the circumstances, I will not buy anything until this is resolved, because I will not be comfortable testing anything either. BAD BUSINESS, DAZ.

  • There seems to be something odd going on with this product. I did send in a query yesterday but have not had a reply yet.

I just tried to install the update as well & get the same error message.

There's a new update and it's fixed now.

  • Yes. It seems to be fixed. The "Missing..." messages have gone away as well. So, DAZ, what lessons were learned?
