Tropical Beach by Dekogon Studios

Well I'm a sucker for all things islands and beaches so this product looks interesting to me, but...

- I still don't get those high priced + products. Why is it "+"? Wouldn't it make more sense to be a DAZ original - discount would be the same anyhow, no?

- What about render times? Looks complex so is it heavy on render time. Any experience?

- Most important: Product is called Tropical Beach but I don't see much shore at all in the promos. So is this more a "palm trees in the sand" product or a "real beach scene"?

They're Daz+ because they're exclusive products. They may be priced high compared to other Daz+ items, but they're not available at all to non-members. They can look at them, they can wishlist them, but they can't add them to the cart. It's possible that Daz's thinking is that they will act as an enticement for people to join Daz+ so that they can get access to these items.

This - they are essentially Daz Originals, but Daz+ exclusive.

Is there an ocean/water plane? I don't see one listed. And I'm using Safari; so, I can't get to the Read Me (or I don't know how to).

$18.59 is the price it comes up for me.

It looks.... "okay". Not bad, but considering the number of iray palm tree/jungle plant/tropical island/jungle sets I've bought on deep discount the last few years, I can't say it makes me want to get it.

Also knowing that Dekagon stuff starts off a Unreal/Unity assets, and there being close-ups of the trees themselves, I would be hesistant that these would not stand up to close-up shots like a lot of game assets don't.

If you're a Daz+ member the monthly $6 coupon should apply. Prices have increased dramatically the past 12 months or so. I've been spending about $1800/year for products but 2021 was around $600, the higher prices have forced me to pick and choose. There is no real value now these days.

This - they are essentially Daz Originals, but Daz+ exclusive.

I should add that as DAZ Originals, they do occasionally see deep discounts. I think some of the earlier Dekogon conversions, which had been selling at about the same price point as this one, went on sale a little while back at prices that were more like the high end of Platinum, excuse me, PC+, I'm sorry, I mean DAZ+. That is to say, about $6 instead of $19.

So if you like the look of the models but can't justify dropping $19 on what are often rather specific products (how often will you use a Saigon office interior or a shot-up restaurant in your renders?), then you might want to wait for the next sale to come along.

I passed. I always judge beaches by their ground planes since I tend to have characters lounging on the sand. Promos make it appear undetailed and blown out. also not seeing much of that water....

  • Thanks for the clarification on my initial post. Will wishlist this for the moment as I also have bought lots of islands and beaches for much cheaper prices in the past.

Would not mind seeing some renders with the actual beach/shore/water line though.

For something that looks to be a basic terrain and tree scatter from UE ported to Daz, it's ridiculously expensive compared to past Dekogon products. But whatever they think they can get away with I guess.

It must be the most expensive DAZ+ item yet. Or are DAZ+ exclusives considered luxury items a step above in quality then the regular new PC+ items?

  • I really hope DAZ+ exclusives don't become a thing. I don't like the idea that I can only buy a product if I pay a subscription fee. It doesn't make me want to get DAZ+, it makes me want to shop elsewhere.

I have this wishlisted on Unreal but I have more tropical trees than any other item (maybe I ave more skeletons) .  The best thing about the trees from other Daz Trees would be the lighter geometry maybe.

A lot seems to be missing in the conversion.

As I said prior, it's essentially an exlusive Daz Original

It's actually one of the cheaper ones, 2 released earlier were a little more expensive.  Both were among the highest sellers of the year, so they are popular with a good chunk of the membership.

Minor bummer for me as a non-member.

Previous + exclusives didn't interest me at all and also seemed rather expensive.

But this one looks actually pretty cool. Oh well, it was bound to happen.

Perhaps we'll be able to get it on those occasional days when all members enjoy + perks.

    Otherwise... there's other beaches.

not hard to roll your own,

Ultrascatter helps, plenty of palms in DAZ store and as you said beaches

And nobody keeps DAZ from making them available to non-DAZ+ customers in the future... wink

I'm not interested in this item, as I got some nice beaches with tons of palms already, which I got from one of those PC+ sales for $ 1.99 (like this one)

DA Palm Island is not currently on sale, but it has been priced as low as $1.99 in the past, and it has water, and it has both Iray and 3Delight materials, and it has camera presets and render presets for different times of day. It has a preload environment and it has individual props. It is an alternative to consider if the new Tropical Beach is not available to you or does not have the water features you want.

I agree that it's not too hard to find other beaches. Which is why this is only a minor bummer smiley

    There's TWO different Coupons...

#1 = $6 off Daz Originals. Excludes Daz+ items, gift cards, FastGrab, and memberships.

#2 = $6 off $18 on Daz, PC, and PA items. Excludes new releases, gift cards, FastGrab, and memberships.

The Dekogon Palms are a) a DAZ+ item and b) a new release, which means neither coupon should work with them.

Yeah, I checked the coupon, not good on Daz+. I don't see why, you only get one coupon each month. I could expand on that but what I would say about the marketing strategies here would get the post deleted.

Well regular Daz+ products are fairly heavily discounted already, apart from these exclusives which aren't discounted much at all for some reason.

I bought the Saigon Office, another exclusive,  on 29 December 2021 ... for $5.99 in one of the sales. It lists for $39.95, and is discounted to $29.95 right now.
Restaurant Crime Scene is the other one, same list and current selling price. I bought it for $16.47 on 9 September 2021.

Yes... for example, https://www.daz3d.com/oso-master-shader1-for-iray  has the best Beach Sand shader I've found so far, but... for a Tropical Island we need a realistic Coral Sand shader - which I've not yet seen (but could probably be done by tweaking Oso's shader).

My biggest problem for "Tropical Island" sets is finding a realistic Coconut Palm model for DAZ Studio:  The most realistic palms I've found so far at DAZ are in https://www.daz3d.com/tropical-palm-trees-for-daz-studio: they are nice realistic-looking, high-resolution  palm trees, but... although they are called "Coconut Palms" in the product description, they are definitely not Coconut Palms.  All the other "Coconut Palm" products offered by DAZ are either 'Toon trees or suitable only for distant use.  This latest Tropical Beach product is no exception, and is certainly not going to tempt me to renew my PC+ subscription.  Also, Coconut Palms have... Coconuts - but none of these seem to.

A quick visit to https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Coconut shows what actual Coconut Palms look like:
