DFORCE CLASSIC LONG CURLY HAIR

I purchased the above product expecting it to snap in place like all the other hair products I purchased. Instead it spreads out like a massive afro and I can't figure out how to make the hair lay down like on the pictures. The instructions don't help. Does anyone know what is wrong?

That's what could be called a draping pose. Since the hair is dForce, it is meant to be simulated into its final shape. Have you used dForce before?

  • Nope.

Go to the Simulation Settings pane - by default, I believe it's right below Render Settings on the left-hand side of DS - and click on the Simulation tab. Uncheck Start Bones From Memorized Pose*, and now you can just hit the Simulate button, and the hair will fall into place. Since this is your first time using dForce, you'll most likely see a pop-up telling you that your openCL kernels need to be compiled. You may also need to go into the Advanced tab at the top of the Simulation pane to set your openCL device. If you have a GPU, you should set that as your device, rather than your CPU.

*it's not strictly necessary to do this, but I've yet to see a compelling reason to keep it checked, and it does add time to the simulation. If you're simulating on a posed figure, you should be using a timeline simulation from the default pose or at least something that ensures none of the items you're simulating are colliding with other objects.

  • Thanks so much. I'll check that out.

Almost no Daz long hair even dforce works well in a laying position. It's mainly due to the weight maps. If you get it working well in laying position shoot us a pic. I usually take the hair into Blender and sculpt it or use VWD (Virtual World Dynamics), which is a different physics system plugin for Daz...but you can't get it from Daz. The biggest problem with the new strand based Deforce hair froM PAs is that you can't actually sculpt it out in 3rd party like Blender so is pretty much blah to me.

One could try creating new deforce weight maps. I havent' tested it yet but I think the constraints that will cause issues in laying position is due to the weight mapping. And easy first try is to remove the current dforce modifier and add a new one one. This will scrap the original weight maps and add a fully unconstrained one...so the hair may fall onto the ground.

I expect I will also face this problem in the future then, Blender is free, I think, but is VWD a different product or a Blender addon, and is it also free? Also, how easy are import and export operations using these tools?

  • All of these suggestions are very helpful. Thanks so much for the tips.

I think you're replying to the wrong thread: https://www.daz3d.com/forums/discussion/479931/how-to-do-laying-down-effect-for-long-hair#latest
