I'm trying to just create a shadow of something, as in, the end render won't show the object but only the shadow.
Seems easy in theory but I can't get any of the lights (point, spot, etc) to actually cast a shadow. Using iRay btw

Make sure you have a surface on which to cast the shadow -- a plane for a floor or a wall, etc. -- also, an object between the spotlight and the surface.
Then, try using a spotlight from the "Create a New Spotlight" button on the menu bar. To make the shadow sharper, try playing with the "Beam Exponent" settings in the Light parameters pane when the spotlight is selected in the Scene tab.
Note that you'll need to either render the scene or use the Iray preview to see the results of all this...
Cheers,
Olo
