Streets of Japan - Stonemason

The Stoneman is back up to his usual mischief. Creating awesome sets for us to use. This time he goes to Japan.

The detail is fantastic. I don't know if Stefan has been to Japan, but I have and it looks like a typical neighbourhood there.

Hey Stefan, make more streets of Japan so I can set up some big scale adventures there!

Like all of Stefan's stuff this is really impressive. Most of my renders are set in a Tolkienesqe fantasy universe so I won't be investing in this one, alas.

    Cheers,

    Alex.

Very typical of what I have seen in Japan... I will buy

Nice addition. I'd like an overview, if possible. It looks less spacious than previous "Streets of" sets.

Holy....   Prior to the Pandemic I was in Japan at least twice a year on business and this is just staggeringly well done.  Not only are the original models for many of the businesses clearly recognizable but, most impressively,  the details of surfaces of the streets and sidewalks are exactly pegged, right down to the unique manhoru (manhole) art that pins the location as one of the back streets of the Shinjuku ward.  Just absolutely brilliant work.

It's so dead on that it's frightening... although given that it's clearly modeled on Shinjuku, it would be nice to have had one or two high rise buildings as extreme background elements.  Not a big deal as I can steal them from another set or just use a billboard of an actual structure. Maybe there'll be an expansion...?

Hey, thanks,I spent some time in Tokyo and Osaka a couple of years ago, so it's all inspired by wandering the back streets of those cities

I can't promise anytime soon but I felt when making this that the Shinjuku, Akihabara and Shibuya high rise style would be better suited to another set, With this one I wanted to focus on low rise and street level

I like that the ubiquitous "7-11" has been turned into "Twenty Four", presumably to avoid trademark issues. And there's something that looks like it could be a bottle of Pocari Sweat in the vending machine. And ... and ... and ...

    As usual, it's eerily accurate.

Also, seeing "Maki Sushi" means that I know have the song "Sushi Bar" by Matmatah stuck in my head ("Maki Jackie Sushi Bar. Jackie Maki Sushi ... Star! Je vais y aller encore ce soir ..."). But there are worse songs to have stuck in your head.

  • I like the bones of it, and the geometry is gorgeous as usual for your work. But you really need to work with someone who understand the language of the places you're making. The majority of the signs make no sense in the combinations you have them on the stores, or have very simplistic words that no store or restaurant would be called. It would be like if I made a "Streets of Berlin" and had a restaurant just called "Brätwurst" frown The Korean text on two of the sodas is also out of place as vending machines are stocked by certain beverage distributors so you're not going to see a rando foreign soda in a vending machine.

You make really lovely sets, and I really wanted to buy this, but I actually took this out of my cart after looking at the pictures because it would take too long to remove the offending geometry and edits the textures.

I love how people have pointed out how acurate this is to large city Japan but this still feels really familiar to where I lived out in the countryside of Japan. This feels so spot on- definitely will be picking this up-excelent work as always!

    Of course, but well..

There is a lot of french words in japanese shop, because they like the drawing. As a french, I can assure you that it makes no sense at all, but it's fun. So.. offending geometry for one of the best content creator here seems very rude... Compare the price of the set, the quality of the texture, the quality of the mesh with other stores... CGTrader, Turbosquid, Renderhub, Artstation...

  • This set is amazing. For the three years prior to COVID, I was going to China a couple times a year for film stuff and one trip my producer decided she wanted to spend a night in Japan so we went. I only spent less than twenty-four hours in Tokyo, we were like a ten minute walk from Shinjuku, and I'm looking at these promo pictures and it feels like I'm there again. I love it and am picking it up now. I hope you do the high rise version as well.

Another Stonemason quality scenery! The whole atmosphere is so close to one in reality

    Some suggestions though:

-I think Japan uses another road sign for speed limit in general (5th image in 1st row)

-It is really rare to see Korean in Japanese vending machines, most Japanese people can't read Korean

  • Oh my gosh this looks so good! I've been waiting for a set like this and have so much stuff that would match too

I love the shutter art of The Wave too

Some of those shots remind me of Usulután, El Salvador C.A., I want to go back but IDK when that'll happen. I'm tempted to pick this set up because just because of this.

i felt the store textures looked flat, without much "3D" detail.

The first is a valid comment though it fails to take into account the fact that DAZ doesn't allow the use of real product names and that given the huge number of Japanese businesses and how off the wall some of those names can be, going generic is about the safest way to avoid potential issues.  (for that matter, the same is true of the film industry, in which Stonemason also works.)  Definitely so much better than seeing the name Stonemason transated into ストーンメーソン a zillion times, which is the route a lot of vendors here take.  As for the comment on the sodas... um, there are a LOT of indepently stocked vending machines in Japan, and there's a thriving market for both new and used machines to a support that market.  Heck, there's a steady market for them just on e-bay.  So, no, NOT controlled by a handfull of distributors and finding a couple of Korean marked beverages isn't much of a stretch considering that I frequently buy grey market US. packed cans of Diet Dr. Pepper out of vending machines in Akihabara and the location of this set is in an area that's one of Tokyo's other biggest tourist magnets.

Was hoping no one would look too closely at the labels in the vending machine, those Korean cola cans have made an appearance in several of my environments and I like to think of them as an Easter egg of sorts.. And yea the signs are very generic, I did do a lot of research on each sign so can only say I did my best as someone who doesn't read or speak Japanese.

Awesome work as always from Stonemason!

Just wondering if the doors and shutters open and close? And do the buildings have at least a basic interior that could be adapted for interior shots?

  • Upon poking around in the product pictures for this set... I was somewhat amused to find out that apparently Japan has designated smoking and non-smoking streets.  Whatta concept!  Gotta love Japan and their sometimes off the wall societal differences. :D :D

I found it so strange that you couldn't smoke outdoors on the street, but you could smoke inside a restaurant

Probably because you technically have choice when it comes to going inside, where being outside in public you may not necessarily be able to make that choice, especially if "upwind" suddenly becomes "downwind".

  • StonemasonStonemason Posts: 1,195
I understand the no smoking on the street thing was due to the Olympics, but every other block seemed to have a designated smoking area where there would be 20 people puffing away, so kinda hard to avoid second smoke in that case

I do! Not fluently, but I do! Ask for help anytime, I need the practice. laugh

But yeah, brand stuff is hard! We 3D artists need to come up with a few public domain, fake brands so we can stop just making laughably obvious ripoffs. Or, using brands that no longer exist is a clever workaround; I found this page on Wikipedia listing a bunch of them.

It is actually banned in restaurants now, though it was on a slow rollout since 2018 and became complete in 2020, so I haven't been back since it's been completely gone.  But all the smoking in restaurants prior to that wasn't that surprising, at least for those of us who were there frequently before they outlawed smoking on the streets, and even then that was more about the cost of cleaning it up than public health.  Because so many of the Japanese smoke like chimneys, and because no one entertains at home due to tiny homes and apartments, most social life focuses on clubs and bars instead, and I remember how there were special giant streetwashing machines that used to have to go around several times a day back in the 90s, sweeping up all the butts and then steam-washing the sidewalks and cobblestones.  Seriously, since Japan has such strict recyclying laws, cigarette butts were usually the only kind of trash on the streets, with the other notable offender being the photo-cards that prostitutes and sexually oriented businesses would leave in the phone booths that would then get accidentally scattered by drunk businessmen.  It continues to baffle me how lung cancer is only the fifth most common kind of cancer in Japan...

This is a decent start. Given that SM's China series (as well as the Scifi one) seems unending (with one iteration following the next), maybe we can have more Japanese stuff too, like the highrise Shinjuku suggestion made earlier.

  • Got this Set today and have currently the Problem, that i can´t apply the Night Materials.

Have select the Group and choose the Material Preset but if i make the prerender, it´s still being the Day Settings. Know maybe someone how i can turn it to night?
