Bring figure to camera

vonHobovonHobo Posts: 1,700

Is there a product that can move the figure or prop in front of the current camera?

The reason I am asking, is because I just purchased Urban Sprawl 3 which has many streets and buildings. The product did not come with any camera views.

So I panned around the city to find a spot I liked. But when I load a vehicle, person, or prop, they do not appear. And I don't know where to move them to so they are visible.

I have a product that moves figure to center. But in this case I want the opposite, because I want to move the figure to where my camera is located, in front of the camera.

Load your figure, and select it.  Then click the move tool, and a little directional widget with directional arrows shows up in your scene where the figure is located.  Then just drag the move tool to where you want the figure to be.  Or,  load your figure and increase its SCALE to 1000% or 5000%.  Your figure will turn into a giant that should be visible in any environment.

the 1000-5000% is a good idea. thanks!

What I do is to simply Parent the new figure momentarily to the desire camera with PARENT in PLACE OFF.  This will take your figure to the Camera & you most likely can't see it.  Immediately UNPARENT with PARENT in PLACE checked ON.  Now, select the figure & move it away from the camera.  Top view may be helpful at his stage.

This ALT key trick might also come in handy:

Just remember to drag the figure you're loading from the Content/Smart Content icon onto the scene while holding the ALT key.  If you simply double click on the icon, it won't work.

I use two free scripts by mcasual.

mcjump: You select two objects and call the script. It will bring the second object to the position of the first one (or the opposite) https://sites.google.com/site/mcasualsdazscripts/mcj

mcjcome: You select an object, call the script and the object is put in front of your camera https://sites.google.com/site/mcasualsdazscripts3/mcjcome

So handy that I created keyboard shortcuts to call these scripts and I use them everyday.

You can also use the Align tool to quickly move one item to the same spot as another. Select the item you want to stay in place, select the item you want to move, then chose where how it aligns on the X,Y & Z axis settings

Is it still better to move the scene around the characters to avoid the scelera (eye) rendering problem that has been discussed in the forums?

    https://www.daz3d.com/forums/discussion/391586/black-sclera-in-the-eyes

Or has that issue been fixed in updates to DAZ Studio?

I tried the ALT key method. Holding ALT key while dragging the figure into the scene from Smart Content pane.

    https://www.daz3d.com/forums/discussion/comment/265676/#Comment_265676

It works! But what if you have a stylized figure that is saved as it's own .duf file. It's not something you can drag from Smart Content. Instead you would have to load it from the file menu. So the ALT key method won't work in that case.

That's where this Cometh Here script would be very useful!

    https://www.daz3d.com/forums/discussion/73507/

It's just that throughout the forums the sclera (eye) rendering problem is pointed out when you move characters away from the world center. But I'm not sure if that is still and issue with the newest version of DAZ Studio.

If anyone can shed some light on that I would be so grateful.

I'm trying to work out which method is best for this madness.

I always create a group for the architecture, which allows me to make the architecture un-selectable in the viewport and easy to move around, so that the area I'm working on is close to the world origin (0,0,0)

Working far away from world origin is known to cause problems due to floating point accuracy issues.

OK thanks! I guess this is the method that is best!

From now on, I will just put all the scene architecture objects into one group and move that group "around" the world center where the characters are positioned.

I was hoping there was an easier way, but I can live with this.

But it makes the "cameras" that come with a lot of products virtually useless if the only view you keep is the default world center.

P.S. How do I create a group so that it is "un-selectable" in the viewport as you mentioned above? And what controls do I use to move the scene around the objects as easy as possible?

You can parent the architecture as well as any lights and cameras to the same group after you have loaded all of them in their default locations and they will keep their relative locations

Making the contents of the group unselectable in the viewport, just click at the checkmarked arrow next to the eye-icon that hides them in viewport, the arrow and eye also work on items independently, but if you use them on the group, all the items in that group are effected.

Edit, I use just the XYZ dials in Parameters to move stuff around, either with the dial or putting a figure to the value field.

Actually, if you saved your .duf out as, for instance, a scene subset, you can drag it from over -- only this time from the regular Content Library.  Simply click open the Content Library and expand the DAZ Studio Formats heading.  Your .duf icon will be found under DAZ Studio Formats/My Library/Scene Subsets.  Then ALT click and drag from there.

Slightly OT, but this is a thread which really needs to get pinned to the top of the forum someday:

New DAZ users are arriving on the boards all the time and this thread alone could save them many headaches.  As it happens, the ALT trick can also be found here, on page 2.

I am on version 4.14 and use the Hollywood Blvd layout. I have Align as a tab in my left side tab grouping, you can use Add Pane and put it where it works for you. It's very handy for putting together modular sets, adding props to scenes (like a vase on top of a table) etc.

In the same place where all the other tabs reside.

I don't understand what this Align tab does.  I selected Genesis 8 Female, then I pick an axis, and it gives me choices.  There's no explaination of what the choices mean.  Such as Align: Centers.  Centers of what?  Center of G8F?  What is it aligned with?  I don't get it?

    Aligning Objects

If you don't see the Align tab, add it to the workspace by right-clicking in the grey area just to the right of the Viewport tab. (see attached image)

    Add Pane (Tab) > Align

These are the instructions for aligning objects.

    1. Select the objects that you want to align. The first item that you select will be the object that the others align to.

    2. Set the appropriate alignment options in the X-axis, Y-axis, and/or Z-axis sections.

    4. Click Apply to align the selected objects.

I have not tried this yet. If you do, let me know if it works. Don't really understand the part about x,y,z.

OK. Tried it. Select an object and then select another object you want to move to the first object.

Click the Align tab (as I mentioned in previous post) and enter "Origins" for all three drop-downs for X, Y, and Z then click "Apply".

In my example here, it moved the Pig Mascot to where Felton Puppet is standing.

Not the most graceful way of moving stuff from one place to another, but easier than filling in X, Y, and Z for the pig with Feltons parameters.

Oh well. This can come in handy at times I'm sure.

P.S. After you select the first item, you can then select a second, third, fourth item and it will move all those items to the first item you selected.

I could have used this tool many times before, when trying to move two figures from one place in the scene to like a desk or couch. I've been slowly dragging stuff all this time. LOL

there was a mcasual script called "come here"

do not know if those scripts still exist

    lots of helpfull scripts there

    but maybe outdated

  • The documentation is still under the old name, Align Ace, in the old Artzone wiki - at least the text version http://docs.daz3d.com/doku.php/artzone/pub/software/align_ace/start . Keep an eye on http://docs.daz3d.com/doku.php/public/software/dazstudio/4/referenceguide/interface/panes/align/start as that would be its updated location.
