hoping there's a secret place for this I'm missing it's a pretty cool little structure

The Scene files (.pz3) are actually installed to the wrong folder. They end up in the DAZ Studio/Scenes folder, but won't be recognized since they are Poser format. The Poser Formats library won't see the DAZ Studio folder, so you will have to move them from "DAZ Studio Formats/*your library name*/Scenes/DM Production Pz3's/Talca" to "Poser Formats/*your library name*/runtime/libraries/Scene/DM Production Pz3's/Talca/" (note the singular use of Scene).
ETA: Of course, this has to be done outside of Studio, in a File Explorer window or similar.
I couldn't figure this out even with someone who is a daz expert that helps me with a screen share from time to time, is there any screen shot you can show me how to find this one? thanks
Assuming Windows, open a file explorer window and navigate to your library folder, then Scenes. Open another explorer and navigate to your library folder, then to "Runtime\Libraries\Scene". Drag and drop the entire "DM Production Pz3's" folder from the first explorer window to the "Runtime\Libraries\Scene" folder in the second explorer window. You will now find the .pz3 files in the Poser Formats Scene folder. I have no less than 17 DM products that all install to the "DM Production Pz3's" folder that I had to move.
Thanks! It works, however there are no icons and missing materials but the structure seems to load intact(tried to load image but wouldn't let me)-the icons are just blank squares, and daz tells you materials are missing with each new icon selected
I am using DIM more and more to see where older stuff has installed as DAZ studio has no idea.
Unless it's created since Genesis 1 onwards good luck finding anything.
The naming conventions in the past were a mess. I found a texture set I recently bought for an Aiko3 outfit under a strange first letter portmanteau of the two texture artists names for example I never could have guessed.
Sorry, I should have looked at my notes first...
The thumbnails don't have the same name as the .pz3 files, so rename them to match.
There is a filename error for "Runtime\textures\danieNmarforno\Talca\DMRref.png", which should be a .jpg. Edit the .pz3 file (it's just text) and replace "DMRref.png" with "DMRref.jpg" wherever it occurs. (No great loss, I personally dislike the fake reflections, but it will get rid of the error).
ETA: Oh, and convert the thumbnails to .png, or they won't show. Man, those really got messed up.
I got DM Talca during the recent holiday freebies season. I'd installed it (DIM) but had not launched it until yesterady. That's when I discovered that fixes were needed. I figured it all out over several hours of detective work so that the product loaded in both DS and Poser 11. The location of the scene files baffled me for a while since there are several scene location in DS.
I resolved the file name for the DMRref texture file by converting the DMRref.jpg file to DMRref.png.
An issue still remains for me, though. Installed to my DS content files were 21 .ds prop files at ...Props\Architecture\DM's Talca and 23 .pp2 prop files at ...Runtime\Libraries\Props\DM Talca. I can load the .pp2 props in DS with no problem. When I attempt to load the identical prop in .ds format, I get an error message - "This action requires an item within the scene to be selected." and the prop does not load. If I load any item (prop, primitive, etc.) into the scene window, select it and then attempt to load a .ds prop, I don't get the error message but the prop does not load. Has anyone had this experience? Solution? This is not a major issue at this point since the Poser format props load.
That sounds like a Poser product and usually, whatever gets installed into DS folders (...\Props\Architecture\) are textures for the product that is installed into Poser folders (...\Runtime\Libraries\)
The error message is correct, you need to load the product from the Poser folder first, select it and then you can apply the materials from the DS folders.
DM Talca is a Poser product from 2008. I don’t know when it appeared in the DS store though. I have several other DM products going back to 2010. When I look at my Product Library, I see that I acquired it a little later than I stated earlier – January 14 rather than the holiday freebies season in December. Most, but not all, of my Poser content loads into DS and most of my DS content loads into Poser.
The .ds files are categorized as Daz Script files so I had concluded yesterday that they really weren’t props as the install location suggests. I just opened Vase11.ds in Notepad and it does appear to be a script for managing materials and textures. When I load the ppz file in DS, it loads fully textured.
I bought DM The Gate in 2010 and it does not have the issue of installing .ds files. So many issues ... so little time. :)
When there is a Daz Studio file with the same name as a Poser file in the Poser library folder DS will read the DS file when the Poser file is double-clicked. It's a way to aply the materials without leaving the Poser content directory, but in general they are only material files (soem items hage hacked presets that will load the model first, but those are not the default set up).
If htat is the case please submit a ticket so QA can get it fixed if it's not on purpose.
Richard,
If I have understood what you posted, am I correct in thinking that I should not delete the .ds files if I want DM Talca product to work in DS?
No, you should not delete them if you plan to use that set in DS.
The materials applied will be for 3DL, but even if you're using Iray they will give you a better starting point than the Poser materials as DS won't read things like specular or displacement maps from Poser materials.
Leana - Thanks.
