It was likely done with pwGhost, a 3DL shader (and does not work in Iray). It is part of a bundle that includes a number of nifty shaders, some of which are no longer available separately, like the lamented pwToon. I am unsure if they are all still included in the bundle (I got it years ago).

There is something similar for Iray, Iray Ghost Shaders, that might be of interest. You need to set it up as directed to get the proper effect.

You really can't get the same effect in Iray, due to not being able to use different settings on the two sides of a surface like with 3DL, ie you cannot set one side completely transparent while the other side is semi visible.

For example, if you try to make a ghost figure with Iray shader, while you can set the materials semi transparent, when looking at the figure from the front, you will also see the inside surface of the back of the head.

I have done some experimenting with ghosts and ended up rendering the ghost separately and doing the effect in post

One side transpaternt and one semi and this effect will be created, that sounds nice and simple?  I could just render in 3dlite with transparent backgrond and add to full image after in gimp , thanks

Although two-sided materials are possible theya re not the solution here - what is needed is a way to have the front-most mask all the others, regardless of facing, but show the other elements behind the model.
