Is there any way to use Ron's Light Painting in GIMP?

I've seen a few posts talking about psd files and GIMP, but I can't get this to work with GIMP.  I put the psd files in my GIMP brushes directory, and... it does nothing.  If I import it, all I get is a big jpg.

Appearently PSD files are poorly supported by GIMP.

Edit.... it appears the above mentioned product is .psd files only so my below post is incorrect.

Yes, deviney's brushes work just fine in GIMP.

Download the .zip file. In the .zip file find the folder containing the .abr file, typically Rons ("name"). Copy that folder into your GIMP brushes folder ( "Where you installed GIMP"/share/gimp/2.0/brushes ). You might need to refresh your brushes in GIMP. (right click > refresh brushes  in the brush window)

A PSD file isn't a brush file. It's a regular image format for Photoshop. There aren't any brushes contained in Ron's Light Painting product, according to the product information page; it's just layered PSD files.

If you try to open the file in Gimp, it may or may not work, depending on version. If this was made for the Creative Cloud version of Photoshop, the file may not open in Gimp, but it's just a regular File menu/Open File procedure, nothing to do with the brushes directory.

Also, brushes made for Creative Cloud Photoshop don't generally work in Gimp. However, when Deviney has CC-compatible brushes in a product, the page usually says so -- see the "What's included" section of https://www.daz3d.com/rons-sand for an example.

  • I don't have the light painting product, but have installed many of Ron's brushes in the past using the above method. There has always been a .abr file in the in the previous products. Has that changed?

There are no abr files in this set.  They are all psd files.

Ron sells different types of products. Some include brushes, others only images. The light paintings set is a set of images.

Okay, sorry for wasting your time. sad I should have looked at the product first.

That is a real shame, deviney makes great products.

I don't have GIMP installed, but I tried opening one of the psd files in Corel Paintshop Pro (the latest version) and it opened just fine. They are on layers just like his cables product.
