Baku for G8.1 Male

Thanks to Spows to coming up with another splendid male figure. There's way too few of these available in the shop... I mean, male figures with character, not those hunky muscle rectangular face type ones, of which there are tons...

Too bad that it is a G8.1 only figure, which will keep me from buying it for quite a long time, as starting to use G8.1 generation figures would mean that I would have to upgrade too much of my runtime with things that I've already got...

So until someone comes up with a "G8.1 to G8 character transfer" product my wishlist will grow a bit I guess...

    What do you mean by that? You don’t need anything special to use G8.1, most G8 content works directly with G8.1.

    Umm, most things that work with G8 will work with G8.1, so you wouldn't have to upgrade anything.  The things that don't work are expressions and geoshells and there are apparently work-arounds for those.

    Buy it, but you need to download the G8.1 Essentials update so that Baku works. That will break many of your face expressions for G8 because that old method is superceded by the G8.1 FACS face expression system.

    Just to clarify this good point: The FACS expressions will not affect the use of your Genesis 8 expressions on any of your Genesis 8 characters. It's only on Genesis 8.1 figures that the FACS dials will be available, and some of your Genesis 8 expressions will not work as intended on Genesis 8.1 because of this change. The new dials essentially replace/serve the same function as some of the older ones. So don't worry about messing up your expressions - they'll still work just fine for the figures they were made to work with. :)

    As I just posted in another thread, I love how Spows characters aren't idealized. 

  • Baku is a wonderful figure.  I like his head and body shapes quite a lot.  I do tend to blend figures together and pump up their physiques a bit.  Baku works quite well for doing that.

    However, Baku gets loaded at 100% with every G8.1M, even the base figure.  I had to uninstall him to restore my saved characters or to use G8.1M base without dialing out Baku every time. 

    I've sent in a trouble ticket and am waiting for a refund.

    I sent a ticket about Baku because his teeth are textured wrong. His front and some back teeth are picking up the gums texture, so he has pink teeth. I haven't noticed him corrrupting other 8.1 figures yet, but I'll check to see if I'm having that issue.
     

    UPDATE: I just tried little Kaden, and he came in looking like Baku. I uninstalled Baku, and Kaden is back to normal. Once Baku was uninstalled, Kaden automatically reverted back to his normal appearance. I'll wait until Baku is fixed before I reinstall him. Darn, because he's so realistic!

    Sounds like a CompatibilityBase problem, again. Re-installing Genesis 8 Male Starter Essentials should restore it, as a short-term workaround.

    ETA: On second thought, that would be to correct a loss of compatibility in Smart Content... not the same thing.

     You can fix it on your end while you're waiting.  All you have to do is open the parameter settings on the dial that's loading in like that and change it so the default (or maybe value) says "0" instead of "1".

    Then you save the morph out and replace the defective one.

    That bug is one of the many eccentric things studio will sometimes do when you're saving out a character.

  • The whole loading with every G8.1 character thing happened with I think VO Xia Mei (not a character from this PA). I sent in a ticket, customer service got back to me saying they knew about it and were fixing it and within a few days there was an update in DIM and it was fixed. So as long as someone has sent in a ticket and they know about it, I'm sure it'll get fixed real soon.

    Figues by Spows probably are the exception for this problem, but quite other male figures come without textures for the male reproduction organ, so one usually has to use a script to copy a part of the torso textures on to them... which doesn't work with 8.1 and - to my knowledge - hasn't been updated yet.

    If there's ways to get geoshells for G8 working G8.1 I proabably missed the post in which the workaround is explained.

    As a more premanent fix (until DAZ fix it themselves) open the dsf from the data folder in a text editor (you may need to uncompress it first). Where the morph is loaded under 'channel' there are 3 values, "value", "min" and max". "value" should be zero and min and max are meant to be zero and 1. Where this error occurs is where "value" is set to 1, it should be set to zero. Change the 1 to zero and save. This will stop it loading on all characters and only load when called by the Baku duf.

    Make a backup of the dsf before editing just in case. If you need to uncompress you will have a bare file with no file extension. This can be edited and after you save it you need to add .dsf at the end of the file name to turn it back into a DAZ file.

    The tooth thing is easy to fix, at least. It turns out that there's apparently a difference in the mouth UVs between Basic Male (Genesis 8) and Basic 8.1 Male UV in the mouth area. Baku shipped with his mouth surfaces set to Basic Male, which is incorrect for him. If you select the mouth surfaces, then switch them to Basic 8.1 Male UV on the surfaces tab, that should fix the pink teeth issue.

    What hair products are being used in the promo images? A good PA lists products used.

    Despite all the listed issues, I am really liking Baku!  I hope they fix what's wonky with him, but I still intend to enjoy him in my library.

    I call this one,

    The Torment of Baku - because I went to load Torment 8.1 and got this happy surprise (which I know how to remedy easily enough)

  • I agree, Baku is indeed splended. Though it is interesting to note that Baku is the capital of the country of Azerbaijan. So I was half expecting an Azeri character to pop up. Pleasently surprised by what I saw.

    That's funny - the name threw me in the same way. If it had been "Bakku" I wouldn't have even batted an eye. :)

    Probably on how one defines "good PA" I guess... people are different... opinions differ.
