3D Printing Question

Someone asked me if it was possible to 3D print a model after I create one from the product I recently got. It says I can make things from this base and sell or share, so non commercial and commercial use. The readme said nothing about 3D printing once I was done creating anything with it. Does anyone know if this is ok or do I need to get one of those licenses I keep reading about?

The standard conditions for 3D printing are set out in the EULA:

The creation of three-dimensional physical representations (3D-print, molded copy, CNC-routed copy, and the like) of Content or any three-dimensional art derived from the Content is permitted only for personal, non-commercial use by the User. Additionally, the user may not grant other entities or individuals the right to produce such physical representations of the Content except for the sole purpose of providing the print to the User for their personal use.

For your own use, yes. Gifted... strictly no, I think, as it says "use by the User", although I'm not certain they intend to be that strict.

As is, there is no "normal" licence that provides permission for 3D printing beyond those standard conditions (the Interactive Licence does not cover this), although you can try contacting Daz Support to ask about specific items.

Very interesting question for this specific case.

Based on my own understanding of the product, I would say you're good to go, but obviously you should wait to hear back from DAZ.

Back in 2018, I'd asked DAZ this, quoting the product description:

I've purchased the product based on the description as a Merchant Resource, and the product notes:

This object is intended as a starting point to model your own figures for Poser, Daz Studio, video game characters, or whatever character application you use, and may not be resold in its original form.

You May use this package for your personal and commercial use

You MAY NOT re-sell or re-distribute the original package as is.

Before I invest time in working with this product and to be sure I didn't misunderstand (which I do more often that I'd like to admit) could you confirm that I am free to edit the mesh, add rigging to create a unique character and then sell those characters (as long as I don't see the original mesh as is)?

The reply I received was this:

According to the information you have given me, yes.  As stated:  "You may use this package for your personal and commercial use" .  The second statement, " You may not re-sell or re-distribute the original package as is."  applies to the original package, which would not be the case if you are indeed creating your own unique characters with it.

So, if it's okay to use this product as a starting point for modelling and rigging to create our own, custom character that you'd be able to sell anywhere, it would seem to follow that "your" character could also be printed in 3D and sold, since you would own it lock, stock and barrel, as long as you're edited it and made it so.

If DAZ says "no", there are a lot of simple meshes like this on the 'net that would allow you to edit and 3D print for about the same price or slightly more, such as here: https://sketchfab.com/3d-models/stickman-low-poly-12b31ea386ee4398a552d15c01615ae9

Please let us know what response you get.

Thanks Wsterdan, that is very helpful and I will double check with Daz.

To the best of my knowledge,, the person in question just wanted it for themselves. It's actually going to be a chibi version of a real person, with their permission of course, they are providing pictures for me to use. The idea was that the model could be used as an animation to use on Twitch when they stream and the character dances when commanded. Their friend wanted to know if it could be printed. I was also going to suggest to the person it's modelled from to use it as an avatar if that's possible, I'm still checking out how that's done, cost effective of course lol.
