renaming material fields in surface tab

I thought it was simple but saw on a post that if renamed the materials will get deleted,

is there a simple way to rename the fields without any materisl changing?

    Have you tried using the Geoemtry Editor and changing the name in the Tool Settings pane (double-click the name)? I just did a simple test and it retianed the minore changes I'd made in the Surfaces pane.

    I'll do it, I went back and that thread where says  materails can be deleted again, seems I didn't read it carefully enough and got scared,  OK  thanks
