I keep reading old posts about how amazing PAINTER'S LIGHTS by j.cade were.  Then either j.cade or PAINTER'S LIGHTS went bye bye for some reason.  But now I notice there are 2 products in the store by j.cade https://www.daz3d.com/hal-for-genesis-8-male

Are these old products, or is j.cade back in business?  If he/she is, then mayb e they can do an iRay PAINTER'S LIGHTS anew?

j.cade also has an active DeviantArt page https://www.deviantart.com/j-cade

She's been posting on the forums for quite a while, and released those two toon characters. I don't know if she's mentioned bringing back Painter's Lights.

If it counts, I have had to reinstall my library too many times on new computers, and again when something happened to the libraries, and the one product that is first to be installed after the essentials is Painter's Lights. Yes, I can do it manually, but I love that set. I would buy an Iray one also.

Er... Painter's Lights was one of the first Iray light sets in the store.

Admittedly I gather that Uray has gone trhough some changes since then, but the originals are still Iray.

I bought them and like them because it's an easy lightweight way to set your render settings, a humdrum background, and add 3 point lighting to multiple characters/objects in a scene. She's stated they are sort of a half measure, (they are, but a very good half measure) and so withdrew them from the store and said they ain't coming back.

If you want a comprehensive set of iRay lighting buy Colm Jackson's Render Studio plus the Render Studio Scenes, Render Studio 2.0 plus Render Studio 2.0 Scenes, and Render FX and you've got a very nice and pretty comprehensive set of lighting products. Those come with documentation so read it as the products are complex and confusing without the documentation (except for the "premade scenes"). Also, as the products make heavy use of volumetric lighting they are slow to render. If you are one of the few forum goers without an RTX 3000 series card be prepared to wait for your renders to develop enough to see if you might want to rearrange the lighting effects in your scene.

I think this is one of those cases where "Perfect is the enemy of good" (thanks, Voltaire).

Painter's Lights is enormously useful, giving very attractive and distinctive renders. I assume that j.cade knows what she's talking about when she says that it could be better, but I'm not sure I understand the logic of withdrawing a very good and useful product just because it could be better. Unless, of course, she has "better" waiting in the wings, in which case, sign me up.

Count me among those who use Painters Lights a lot. Especially for animations and quick renders with just the HDRi and a spotlight. Nice ambient light without harsh shadows ... well, I'm just happy I got them before they were withdrawn.

another product i have ... long forgotten. time to resurrect.

If j.cade is reading this - you can probably make a lot of money by either reintroducting your Painter's Lights, or making your improvemets, then selling it again.

Meanwhile, would somone be good enough to post a few renders (old or new, promo images, or whatever) that show me what effects the Painter's Lights had on the scenes?  I was a motion picture union grip and carried around a ton of lights.  I might be able to duplicate whatever the Painter's Lights effect.

    Thanks!

These questions seem to pop up regularly, I don't think she's interested. Tried to PM her as well for maybe a private sale, but haven't gotten any reaction.

They came out before I joined Daz, but why I thought they weren't Iray, is when I am checking the effect and switch to Iray, the light's positions switch sides. Or it appears to do so. That confused me, but I have just grown to expect it over the years.

The fact the PA doesn't seem to want to bring them back makes me doubtful that the were ever "amazing" to begin with. (This is one reason why I feel I haven't missed out on anything.) But then, there's been other PAs that retire products they personally view weren't good-enough, much like other visual artists who delete or destroy work that isn't up to their current standards.

I can vouche for how good those lights were...I use them almost exclusively for my renders.....and they are very easy to tweak and adjust

  • +1 That light set is actually my go-to as well, especially when I want to render things for promos. I usually add more lights and HDRI's, but they are a great starting point for sure. I used them for most of the promos of our Tentacle Arms.

YOU SEE! Those lights are the Golden Fleeece, the Arc of the Covanent, the lost gold of the Incas!  They are the greatest light set ever invented.  The Human Race depends on those lights being reserected.

Although, painters didn't use lights.  They used window light.

I wish I had the skill to light an indoor scene just using window light. It is probably possible but I have to make walls invisible and add a spotlight.

Is this a light rig set or a HDR? If ligth rig, how hard is it to just reproduce the transform and lumes settings?

This is DAZ, most here want a one click solution for everything, LOL

I asked a couple of users about these lights awhile back and they sent me examples and I was never impressed enough to pick them up.

HDR environments and also light sets. I tend to use the HDR along with a photometric spotlight but all the options are there (and there are lots of options).

Ahh, I've got such a huge HDR collection as it is, and make my own in affinity if really need something special. The photometric light is what a distant light with an IES?

In affinity you can either just scribble some dots in paint HDR mode or convert a photo to HDR, grab panaramas from like shutterstock and convert them to HDRIs too.

Attached is a 24bit template for making ones own to use as an enviroment map, if anyone is intersted. You'll have to change it to 32bit HDR but shows the Back Right Front Left Top Bottom zones.  That's of course dome rotation default 0.
