Reality 4 and lux render questions.
i just bought reality 4 and downloaded it,but haven't installed it yet because I have a couple of questions.
I'm hoping some of you can help me out.
So,I'm using the 64bit version.I went to download Lux and there are two options an open cl version and a non open cl version.the open cl version uses your video card in parallel.I have a gtx760 with 2gigs of vram.I know it's open Gl but don't know if it supports open cl.
Does any one have a similar card o any experience with this? Also, when downloading lux there is a reg download and an "archive"download. What's the difference?
And finaly, reality says to use the 1.31. version, but i noticed there's also a newer 1.4 version.should I stick to the users guide and use the 1.3.1 or what?
Any other tips would be highly appreciated.Plan on installing tonight. Thanks

For your card...get the OpenCL version.
Stick with 1.31. That's the one that matches that version of Reality.
The OpenCl version of Lux enables you to use the GPU for rendering. Your card supports this so you should get this version. I believe you need later drivers on your card for OpenCL to work, but I assume you have updated them by now as the card is quite old. Something to check though.
It's only recommended to use the GPU to assist CPU rendering (sometimes called hybrid rendering) as pure GPU rendering has various limitations and is pretty much experimental. In the Render tab check GPU assisted AND select monodirectional path tracing (bidirectional is default). Monodirectional has some limitations, but unless you are trying to create fancy caustics with glass you shouldn't notice them. The speed advantage of mono is very noticable with CPU and hybdrid, but you should always use it with hybrid.
Bidir is the most accurate, and as I said, if you want great realistic solid glass objects use bidir. Everyday kinds of glass like windows, eye surfaces, etc., are fine in monodirectional though.
Lux 1.4 will not be supported by Reality as it is a kind of experimental transient version. 1.5 should be coming "soon" and there will be an update to Reality to support its improvements (such as apparently dramatic increases in CPU rendering speed).
there are two download files for lux one that says "Archive" and one that says "Installer"Do I need them both?
The Archive is just a zip file, you need to put the files where they belong...no Start Menu shortcut, no Desktop icon...etc.
The Installer...an actual installer that does it all for you.
Other than that, they are the same thing.
Thanks,
Yeah,I just kind of winged it and figured it out...i wish i was half as good with software as i am with hardware.
Thanks though,i really appreciate the response. It seems as though everything is ok.reality loaded.Lux loaded .registration went good.everything shows up in DAZ..haven't rendered anything yetbecause...well O.k. i just discovered the new daredevil series on Netflix and have been binge watching 8 episodes..It's 3:30am and i have to be at work at 10..Damned you Daredevil.
