Making Roughness maps from Specular maps?

I'm not able to test this right now, but I was wondering if anyone has been able to create decent Roughness maps (for Iray) by inverting a Specular map. Does that work at all? White in a Roughness map means 'not shiny', so I thought maybe inverting a Specular map (where white is shiny) could be something to try.

    Roughness would be more the inverse of Glossiness - so it would depend on what the specular map was doing.
