How do you create your own fibermesh hair?

Multiple google search variations on "create fibermesh hair Daz" (sans quotes) result in pages discussing ZBrush fibermesh hair and somehow importing it into daz studio. Is this the only means of creating fibermesh? Because this seem to be ideal for small patches of hair, e.g. eyebrows, gens, and old men's very thin head hair.

Daz Studio has a built in capability to create Strand-Based Hair. Give that a try. There are forum threads about it if you do a Google search with those terms.

This thread covers a lot of ground with DS's built-in SBH tools. 3Diva mainly focused on hairstyles, while I experimented with beards, eyebrows and chest hair.

Also, ZBrush isn't the only way to make fiber mesh hair outside of DS. C4D, Blender, Maya and I believe 3DS Max also have their own hair tools.

Thank you guys. I have made a start at learning about with strand based hair and have poked at it experimenally - trying it on a couple of renders. It seems conceptually similar to Blender's hair creation (at least up thru verson 2.8), only with fewer examples and less documentation. Oh and please tell me that fibermesh is not just another name for SBH.

The thing I am curious about is fibermesh, since it seems to get more authentic looking results for the uses I have in mind - I have yet to find an example in a product that was not fairly convincing, So, I want to see how difficult it is to get good results, which unforturnately seems to be a high bar for SBH, not to mention the requirment of PA status to get better tools.

However, if it turns out the zbrush is required to create original fibermesh content, then I probably don't need to do any further investigation.

I think this is the original announcement thread about Strand-Based Hair. It is 45 pages long and has examples of hair that people (including me) have created.

  • Thank you barbult. But I'm asking about fibermesh. See my response above.

I thought it sounded like you didn't want to invest on other software to create the hair. I must have misunderstood.

  • You did not misunderstand. I was just holding out hope until you confirmed my worst fears about fibermesh creation.

To that end, it sounds like you are telling me that Zbrush is required for fibermesh. Well drat! (or words to that effect.) Thank you for confirming, and thanks also for the link to the community brain dump for strand based hairyness.

No, I don't know that. I don't own Zbrush and I have never created fibermesh hair. Gordig mentioned other software that you could use. Of those he mentioned, I think only Blender is free. I've never used Blender's hair system. I don't know if it is fibermesh or not.

  • Fibermesh and DAZ strandbased hair (and LAMH) all actually end up much the same if made into geometry

    as does Blender particle hair

strandbased and LAMH has the advantage of being curves in DAZ studio so less overheads

none of them can be made into Dforce hair though unless you are a PA

but all fine for image renders with hand styling

I own Zbrush and don't really bother with the Fibermesh that much as it's very heavy

I only really use it for short hairs with a few puppeteered movements in Filament as I do animations

you really don't want to try dforcing it devilas it's a lot of geometry (PAs make it into curves)

  • Thank you WendyLuvsCatz. You guys excel at pitching in to help a fellow DAZler. My goal was just to satisfy my curiosity, thinking "fibermesh" was something unique from strand-based and dForce based hair - some super secret DAZ magic that would make all my hairy issues easier to resolve. (Sorry, I blurt out puns if I stay up too late. I apologize for any pain I've caused.)
