Grass. It's all I'm asking for.

I'm a not-so-new user of Daz Studio, and I know my way around the system. The one continual issue I have is not being able to model grass in any way, shape, or form.

I've tried Foreground Blends, following the (what little there are in the way of) directions: place a Lawn prop. I can see the grass elements in Texture Shaded mode (seen in photos below) but when I try to render using Iray I get nothing. Whenever I try to load an H Material, I get an error message "Invalid hierarchy for selected node(s) and "preset_hierarchical_material" type; no root(s) found." no matter which element in the Scene tree I select.

I've tried the AoA Grass Shader with pretty much the same results.

About the only thing that works is adding a picture of grass as a texture on a plane which gives me a very nice picture of grass. With no dimensions.

I'm not altering the props or surfaces in any way. I assume the products work, so my next assumption is that I'm doing something incredibly wrong. Or at least, very newbie.

Does anyone have any suggestions?

  • The AoA grass shader is, as I recall, for 3Deligfht and relies on displacement.

What is your load sequence with the Foreground Blends product, and which version of Daz Studio are you using?

Pretty simple, really. Daz Studio version 4.16.0.3

    • Brand new scene.
    • I drag out a prop "FGB Lawn Square Full."
    • I select it in the Scene tab and then apply an H. Material "FGB All Ground Mat Grass 3."
    • I get an alert "An error occurred while reading the file, see the log file for more details." Log file tells me "Invalid hierarchy for selected node(s) and "preset_hierarchical_material" type; no root(s) found."
    • Thinking I just selected the wrong item in the Scene tree, I try diving down a level and select the Grass bone and retry applying the material. Same result.

I've tried with the plain Ground Square, applying textures to it. I've tried various of the other pre-canned props. I can see it in Texture Shaded mode (well, outlines of the individual grass pieces in gray) but nothing renders at all in Iray. I'm at kind of a loss as to how to proceed.

  • This is one solution to the grass problem I especially like. It has its limits, but I've been pretty happy with it.

Load FGB !Ground Square first, then double-click the FGB Lawn Square Full.

If you are just loading a base model and applying grass rather than one of the groups then you need to use the materials that don't have a horizontal bar showing the Foreground Blend label next to a group icon across the bottom - those are for the pre-made groups.

Yup. Followed your directions. 1st image is before. 2nd image is after loading FGB !Ground Square. 3rd image is after double-clicking FGB Lawn Square Full. 4th image is in Texture Shaded mode, so I can see the grass is there. It just doesn't render. I tried adjusting every slider in the surfaces tab for each object without any effect. Like I said, I'm stumped.

Hit Alt+Shift+U and try rendering again.

    +1

    Here's a test render I once did using the Base + Full-A + Full-C layers:

look at your first picture, the junction of the ground and the wall, it shows your DAZ ground is higher than your farm ground.

either raise up your farm totally, or turn off 'draw ground' in render settings.

That is, make sure you are suing one of the posing tools (the shortcut is the Universal tool) rather than the Geometry Editor or one of the other set up tools.

Actually, I've moved the patch up/down without any effect. I think the picture was a bit misleading--it was definitely above ground.

I'm almost always in the Universal tool. No effect.
