Viewport Preview darkness

I am having a really difficult time adjusting thing in a scene, like items on a table to be resting on the table.

The problem is that in every Viewport preview mode except Iray, it's all too dark. Even with lights brighly lighting the scene, the Wire Frame and other preview modes are too dark and I cannot clearly see the items. The Iray preview drawstyle mode works, I can see things clearly, but it's just way too slow to get any work done.

Is there some way to get a clear image of everything in a Preview mode other than Iray?

Enable Preview Lights (Viewport Pane context menu, the upper one, or Ctrl-L).

OMG. This is a godsend! Thank you!

I pressed Ctrl-L and the whole scene lights up! cool I can see now!

  • I didn't know about it until I watched that first Jay Versluis video, I highly recommend it!

Yeah, I couldn't work in DAZ Studio without it. I just wish there was a way to have it lit that way by default.

You mean disable - Preview Lights is on by default, and will make the Viewport dark if the lights being previewed are dim or not placed to shine on the items in view.

Uh-h, right. I just toggle it until it does what I want...

Yeah, these lights on or off always confuses me too. The thing is that I assume they are ON if the scene is light enough to see what I'm doing. Turns out that they are off which is counter-intuitive for me. I often have a scene with just HDRi or emmisive lights which is totally dark with the Scene Lights toggled ON.

The "Preview Lights" ON should show you the scene as it is lit with the lights in the scene, but as it doesn't show for example meshlights, the scene usually becomes dark.

I know ... it just takes me a while to remember that "Preview Lights" means preview (verb) the photometric lights in the scene which are the only type of lighting which will show in preview mode. Anything else: emissive or HDRi or Sun-Sky will be dark making it impossible to see what I am doing. Anyhow, it seems it is just as confusing to try to decribe the confusion so I ignore it and just use CRTL-L to make sure I can see what I'm doing.
